As a Staff Software Engineer on our Billing team, you will be a vital contributor to building and scaling our financial systems to support a broad range of pricing models and innovative healthcare products. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop scalable solutions that meet the needs of our growing user base, while also incorporating the latest advancements in technology, including generative AI tools, to improve our workflows and engineering practices.

What you'll do
- Lead the architectural design and development of Zocdoc's billing platform, ensuring it is scalable, reliable, and capable of supporting future growth in provider and patient transactions.
- Develop and maintain complex event-driven workflows and pricing algorithms that handle diverse billing scenarios, including subscription models, one-time payments, and insurance integrations.
- Collaborate with Finance, Product, and Design teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions that improve billing accuracy and user experience.
- Work alongside fellow engineers to establish and uphold best practices for code quality, testing, deployment, and system observability, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Ensure the integrity and stability of the billing engine by monitoring financial data, diagnosing issues, and implementing reliable fixes promptly.
- Design and implement scalable APIs and data pipelines that support billing operations and reporting needs.
- Incorporate the latest generative AI tools into workflows to automate repetitive tasks, enhance code quality, and streamline technical planning processes.
- Participate in technical planning sessions, providing guidance on system design, security, and compliance considerations relevant to financial data.
- Mentor junior engineers, sharing knowledge and fostering a collaborative environment that encourages growth and innovation.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to support initiatives that improve the overall billing infrastructure and customer experience.
- Advocate for best practices in system security, data privacy, and regulatory compliance, especially considering the sensitive nature of financial information.
- Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing to ensure team alignment and onboarding efficiency.
- Support the ongoing evolution of our billing systems to adapt to new healthcare regulations, payment models, and technological advancements.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in software engineering, with a focus on building and scaling high-performance backend services, APIs, and ETL pipelines in event-driven, distributed systems.
- Proven track record of designing and maintaining reliable, high-throughput systems that handle sensitive financial data with precision and security.
- Deep experience working in cloud-native environments, particularly AWS, with a strong understanding of managing infrastructure as code.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects from initial conception through deployment, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and ambiguity.
- Experience integrating generative AI tools into workflows to automate tasks, improve productivity, and enhance system design.
- Strong leadership skills, including guiding teams on best practices for testing, deployment, and system observability to ensure high-quality output.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborating effectively across teams.

- Experience working with financial or billing systems is a plus but not required.

- Proficiency in backend programming languages and frameworks relevant to our stack.
- Strong understanding of event-driven architectures and distributed systems design principles.
- Experience with modern CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure management, particularly AWS services.
- Knowledge of database systems, both relational and NoSQL, used in financial data storage and processing.
- Ability to incorporate AI and machine learning tools into engineering workflows to automate and optimize processes.
Practical notes
- The salary range for this position in New York City is between $211,100 and $285,000 USD, depending on experience and qualifications.
