About the role
In this position, you will be a key contributor to Zocdoc's efforts to enhance its interoperability capabilities by working directly with over 170 electronic health record (EHR) systems. Your primary focus will be on developing and improving real-time data exchange solutions, which are critical for enabling interactions between patients and healthcare providers. You will lead initiatives to design scalable, reliable, and efficient systems that support complex integrations, ensuring that Zocdoc's platform can handle the diverse needs of healthcare providers and patients alike. Your work will influence the technical direction of the interoperability team and contribute to the broader product vision, helping Zocdoc maintain its leadership in the digital health marketplace. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and designers, to deliver solutions that meet healthcare standards and regulatory requirements, ultimately improving the quality and accessibility of healthcare services facilitated through Zocdoc.

What you'll do
- Take ownership of the technical strategy for interoperability at Zocdoc, ensuring alignment with company goals and healthcare industry standards.
- Develop and implement scalable, solutions to support the integration of Zocdoc's platform with a wide range of EHR systems, including those with complex and demanding requirements.
- Lead the redesign of existing synchronization frameworks to enable real-time data exchange, reducing latency and improving data consistency across systems.
- Create and maintain abstractions that simplify the complexities associated with different EHR systems, making it easier for product teams to build features without needing to understand every underlying protocol or data format.
- Analyze complex product challenges related to interoperability, providing technical guidance and designing effective solutions that address these issues.
- Write high-quality, production-ready code using C# and AWS technologies, and contribute to the front-end using React, serving millions of users reliably.
- Collaborate closely with a talented team of engineers, product managers, and designers in an agile environment, participating in planning, reviews, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct thorough code reviews, and promote best practices in software development to elevate the team's overall technical proficiency.
- Continuously refine engineering processes, including testing, deployment, and documentation, to improve solution quality and team efficiency.
- Stay current with industry trends, emerging standards, and new technologies related to healthcare interoperability, and incorporate relevant innovations into Zocdoc's platform.
- Ensure all solutions comply with healthcare regulations, standards such as HL7 and FHIR, and security best practices to protect patient data.
- Work with stakeholders across the organization to translate business needs into technical requirements and deliver scalable solutions that meet those needs.
- Participate in cross-team initiatives to improve overall platform stability, scalability, and security.
- Document system designs, APIs, and workflows to facilitate knowledge sharing and onboarding of new team members.
- Contribute to the development of internal tools and frameworks that improve developer productivity and streamline integration processes.
- Engage in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues related to data synchronization, system performance, and security.
- Advocate for quality, maintainability, and scalability in all engineering efforts, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Extensive experience designing, building, and delivering high-impact solutions and frameworks, particularly in complex system integrations involving multiple external systems.
- Proven ability to develop platforms or frameworks that abstract complexity, providing user-friendly APIs and interfaces for engineering teams.
- Strong system design and architectural leadership skills, with a track record of designing scalable and reliable systems.
- A product-oriented mindset that emphasizes delivering value to customers and end-users through technical solutions.
- Experience in improving developer productivity by implementing best practices in coding, testing, deployment, and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and promote engineering excellence within a team.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of discussing technical concepts clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

- Experience working in distributed or remote teams is preferred but not required.
- Over 10 years of experience in backend development, with a strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles.
- Familiarity with AWS cloud services, including deployment, scaling, and security best practices.
- Knowledge of healthcare data standards such as HL7 and FHIR is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Experience with testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and automation tools to ensure high-quality releases.
Nice to have
- Prior experience working within healthcare or health IT environments, understanding the unique challenges and standards involved.
- Knowledge of real-time data exchange protocols, messaging systems, or middleware solutions.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies such as React or other JavaScript frameworks.
- Experience with API design, microservices architecture, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Understanding of security and compliance requirements specific to healthcare data, including HIPAA.

Practical notes
- This is an on-site role based in New York, NY.
- The salary range for this position is $201,400 to $304,000 USD, depending on experience and qualifications.
