Senior Field Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the full integration and reliability of Overview.ai computer vision systems directly on the factory floor, treating line uptime as a personal responsibility. You will diagnose and resolve the toughest field issues involving intermittent I/O, timing jitter, noisy signals, and flaky network behavior that prevent stable high-speed production. You will work hand-in-hand with world-class AI, embedded, and firmware teams to turn field findings into permanent product improvements shipped globally. You will act as the senior technical owner on-site, trusted to make calm, structured decisions under pressure with operators and management. You will build and enforce repeatable integration standards so that future lines are commissioned faster and more reliably. You will deepen elite controls and electrical debugging skills while solving high-leverage problems that directly impact real manufacturing throughput. You will travel extensively across China to multiple customer sites, operating with high autonomy and deep ownership of outcomes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Integrate Overview.ai systems into production automation lines and ensure they are rock-solid in live manufacturing environments.
- Commission and troubleshoot PLC-to-device communication across industrial protocols including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, and OPC UA with attention to real-world variants.
- Diagnose and eliminate timing and triggering defects such as double triggers, missed triggers, trigger bounce, incorrect edge detection, latency, jitter, and inconsistent handshakes.
- Debug inconsistent network communication caused by packet loss, unstable links, IP conflicts, switch configuration issues, grounding and noise coupling, cable quality, and EMI or misconfigured QoS and VLANs.
- Collaborate with PLC logic and machine sequencing to stabilize integration and performance by interpreting and modifying ladder logic or structured text when necessary.
- Construct repeatable integration standards covering wiring patterns, sensor conditioning recommendations, network topologies, validated PLC templates, and commissioning checklists.
- Troubleshoot sensors, discrete I/O, and signal conditioning in harsh factory conditions including NPN and PNP sensors, pull-ups and pull-downs, filtering and debounce, shielding and grounding, and noise mitigation.
- Use multimeters and oscilloscopes to investigate voltage levels, signal bounce, timing alignment, interference, poor grounding, intermittent connections, and other electrical anomalies.
- Identify root causes rapidly and implement robust fixes rather than temporary patches, documenting reproduction steps, logs, electrical measurements, network symptoms, PLC state, and corrective actions.
- Serve as the on-site senior technical point of contact, training customer automation engineers and technicians on best practices for operation and first-line troubleshooting.
- Capture high-quality issue reports that feed directly to headquarters engineering to drive product improvements in tooling, diagnostics, and reliability features.
- Drive feedback loops that result in tangible product improvements and increased line stability across the deployed fleet of devices.
Requirements
- Must have deep PLC and controls engineering experience with the ability to independently commission and debug automation lines from the ground up.
- Must bring a minimum of 5 years of hands-on controls or field engineering experience in high-volume manufacturing environments.
- Must possess hands-on expertise with industrial networks and protocols such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, and OPC UA, with practical troubleshooting skills beyond theoretical knowledge.
- Must demonstrate strong electrical debugging ability using a multimeter and oscilloscope, including reading schematics, signal conditioning, and understanding EMI and noise issues.
- Must have a strong grasp of sensors, triggering mechanisms, and real-time sequencing on production lines to ensure correct system behavior.
- Must be fluent in Mandarin at a native or near-native level to communicate effectively with on-site teams and stakeholders.
- Must have working English skills to collaborate with global engineering and operations teams on technical matters.
- Must move fast while staying methodical, following a clear process of hypothesis, test, isolate, fix, and prevent recurrence in complex field environments.
- Must be highly ownership-driven, treating line downtime as a personal responsibility and responding with urgency and precision.
- Must communicate clearly and professionally with both operators and engineers across cultural and technical boundaries.
- Must enjoy field work that involves frequent travel to factories, hands-on troubleshooting, and operating reliably under pressure.
Nice to have
