Telecom Designer - Facility Engineering

About the role

Olsson is seeking a Telecom Designer to join our Facility Engineering and Design (FED) Team. This position involves designing low voltage telecommunications and audio/visual systems for a variety of projects, including data centers, healthcare facilities, and other commercial buildings. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams to develop detailed designs, ensuring systems meet client specifications and industry standards. As part of the team, you will be involved in creating detailed drawings, specifications, and layouts that support the successful implementation of complex low voltage systems. Key facts

What you'll do

• Use CAD and BIM software to create comprehensive and precise designs for low voltage telecommunications and audio/visual systems, including cable pathways, equipment layouts, and system schematics.
• Develop detailed construction drawings and specifications that adhere to industry standards and client requirements.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other design team members to ensure integrated and coordinated system designs.
• Assist in managing project timelines and deliverables, ensuring all design components are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Participate in client meetings to understand project needs and present design concepts, modifications, and updates effectively.
• Travel to project sites as needed to conduct site assessments, verify existing conditions, and support installation activities.
• Support the review of shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs related to low voltage systems to ensure compliance with design intent.
• Keep current with industry standards, codes, and best practices related to telecommunications, security, and audio/visual systems.
• Contribute to the development of project documentation, including system narratives, wiring diagrams, and equipment schedules.
• Assist in coordinating with other disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, and civil teams to ensure seamless integration of systems.
• Support quality control processes by reviewing designs for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project specifications.
• Maintain organized project files and documentation to facilitate smooth project execution and future reference.

Requirements

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with team members and clients.

• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot design issues and develop practical solutions.
• An Associate degree in Drafting and Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience using CAD and BIM software, particularly Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.
• Experience designing low voltage systems, including telecommunications, security, or audio/visual systems.
• Knowledge of industry standards, codes, and best practices related to low voltage systems.
• Willingness to learn new skills and stay current with evolving technology and design methodologies.
• Ability to interpret and develop complex technical drawings and specifications.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage multiple project components effectively.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
• Ability to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with project management practices and tools.
• Previous experience working directly with clients or in a client-facing role.
• Knowledge of industry standards such as NFPA, NEC, and local building codes related to low voltage systems.
• Experience with other design software or tools that support telecommunications and audio/visual system design.
• Certification or training related to telecommunications or security systems.
