About the role
Hinge Health is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Device Software team inside Hardware R&D to own the software systems that power a connected medical device experience. This role will focus on device-control flows, mobile and backend integrations, device telemetry, and the clinical and operational workflows required to support the product end to end. The hire will act as a key technical leader for Device Software, ensuring reliable, scalable software across connected device experiences and the backend systems that enable them. This is a staff-level individual contributor role with strong backend ownership for device-adjacent software, emphasizing Python and Next.js systems. The role requires partnering closely with Product, Clinical, Regulatory, Hardware Engineering, Data, and Quality stakeholders to navigate complex technical and compliance constraints. The successful candidate will thrive on owning hard technical problems, operating across boundaries, and building software that directly impacts member outcomes in a regulated healthcare setting.

What you'll do
Lead the design and delivery of backend-heavy, device-adjacent software systems that power connected device experiences, clinical workflows, and supporting operational tools.
Own complex technical initiatives from problem framing through implementation, with a strong focus on Python services, Next.js applications, APIs, and integrations that connect device, app, and backend surfaces.
Drive architecture and technical decision-making for scalable, maintainable systems spanning mobile, backend, device-control, and telemetry flows while balancing speed and compliance.
Partner closely with engineering, product, design, hardware, clinical, and regulatory stakeholders to translate ambiguous requirements into pragmatic execution plans with clear tradeoffs and risk mitigation.
Build and improve the software foundations behind major Device Software initiatives, including deep link unlock, clinical research platform work, and OTA-related capabilities that ensure reliable device behavior.
Raise the technical bar for backend quality, observability, testability, and operational excellence in a production environment that values owner-operator accountability and rigorous standards.
Mentor engineers through design reviews, implementation guidance, debugging sessions, and day-to-day technical leadership to help the team make strong technical decisions and ship with confidence.
Proactively identify platform gaps, technical debt, and workflow improvements that increase delivery speed, reduce regressions, and improve long-term maintainability across device and backend systems.
Champion end-to-end system reliability by collaborating with hardware, firmware, and backend teams to ensure device telemetry, control commands, and data flows operate seamlessly and securely.
Translate clinical and regulatory requirements into technical specifications, ensuring device software capabilities meet quality, safety, and compliance expectations for healthcare delivery.
Contribute to the continuous delivery pipeline by refining deployment processes, test coverage, and release strategies that support frequent, safe updates to device and backend software.
Support on-call responsibilities and incident response activities, driving root cause analysis and remediation for production issues that affect device functionality or member care.
Work closely with data and analytics teams to ensure telemetry and event data from connected devices are reliable, secure, and actionable for product and clinical insights.
Advocate for accessibility, usability, and privacy considerations in device software design, aligning with Hinge Health's mission to make healthcare more scalable and human-centered.
Help define and evolve the technical roadmap for Device Software, identifying opportunities to standardize components, automate workflows, and simplify integration patterns.
Requirements
Bring 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems that serve users in real-world conditions.
Demonstrate strong backend engineering experience, including designing APIs, building scalable services, and working in microservice-oriented architectures that support device workflows.
Showcase strong experience with Python in production systems, including writing maintainable, testable, and performant code that meets healthcare quality standards.
Prove strong experience building modern web applications with Next.js and TypeScript, including managing frontend and backend integration challenges.
Have experience working across end-to-end systems that connect backend services, mobile or web clients, and device-adjacent software surfaces to ensure cohesive behavior.
Show competence with cloud infrastructure and modern backend tooling such as AWS, Docker, Postgres, Redis, GraphQL, and related systems that support reliable device operations.
Demonstrate a track record of debugging complex production issues, improving reliability, and strengthening observability and release confidence for critical healthcare software.
Exhibit demonstrated technical leadership through architectural influence, cross-functional collaboration, and mentoring other engineers to raise the overall quality of device software.
Nice to have
Experience working on connected devices, BLE flows, device-control experiences, or software developed in close partnership with firmware and hardware teams.
Experience in regulated or quality-sensitive domains such as healthcare, medical devices, HIPAA, FDA-regulated products, or similar environments where compliance impacts software delivery.
Experience with React Native or mobile application development in support of end-to-end device experiences that integrate with backend services.
Experience building internal tools, developer productivity workflows, simulation layers, or test infrastructure for complex systems that involve devices and software.
Experience operating effectively in high-ambiguity environments where a staff engineer is expected to define scope, surface risks early, and guide execution across multiple teams without clear precedent.
Practical notes
This role is based in San Francisco at our headquarters and requires a commitment to in-person collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Full-time engagement is required, with expectations for synchronous participation during core working hours.
Travel is not expected as part of this role, and remote work arrangements are not applicable given the onsite requirement.
