Staff Engineer/Tech Lead, MSK Verticals
Job description
Staff Engineer/Tech Lead, MSK Verticals at Hinge Health.
About the role
You will serve as the primary technical owner for the complete lifecycle of musculoskeletal care programs within our member ecosystem. This role requires you to transform ambiguous product concepts into concrete technical strategies and robust implementations. You will balance the creation of new differentiated program features with the long-term stability and health of existing services. Success demands independent execution paired with precise alignment to product and partner objectives. You will ensure every program delivers a coherent, reliable, and high-quality member experience through technical leadership.
Key facts
What you'll do
Set and evolve the technical vision for your pod, making daily architectural and prioritization decisions that maintain development momentum and program integrity.
Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of new MSK programs, ensuring each offering is a credible, distinct product rather than a rebranded extension of existing services.
Own the stabilization and scaling of recently launched programs, focusing on performance, reliability, and quality as user adoption increases and usage patterns evolve.
Extend shared backend platforms, including NestJS services and PostgreSQL databases, to support new initiatives while preventing fragmentation and maintaining architectural coherence.
Translate strategic product goals into executable technical plans in collaboration with product managers, clearly articulating trade-offs, risks, and alternative approaches.
Collaborate with engineers on partner teams to ensure a seamless member journey across all touchpoints, services, and care programs, removing integration friction.
Champion strong engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, and robust monitoring to improve quality and delivery reliability.
Mentor peers and elevate the technical standards of the team through code review, knowledge sharing, and the establishment of sustainable technical patterns.
Act as a technical visionary in ambiguous environments, developing concrete plans for complex product initiatives that balance innovation with operational stability.
Balance greenfield development efforts with the essential work of hardening and optimizing live systems to ensure long-term reliability and scalability.
Act as a force multiplier within the pod, raising the capabilities of colleagues through mentorship, constructive code review, and the establishment of best practices.
Navigate cross-team dependencies and collaborate effectively with multiple service owners to achieve coherent outcomes across a fragmented technical landscape.
Contribute to the design of our shared platforms to ensure new MSK programs can be delivered efficiently without introducing unnecessary complexity or technical debt.
Advocate for member-centric engineering decisions by ensuring that technical choices directly support reliable, high-quality member experiences and outcomes.
Requirements
You possess a minimum of 4 years of full-time professional software engineering experience following completion of internships.
You have at least 2 years of hands-on experience with TypeScript and JavaScript, spanning both backend and frontend development responsibilities.
This includes demonstrated work with Node.js, NestJS, and frontend or mobile frameworks such as React or React Native.
You are experienced with cloud platforms such as AWS and modern containerization practices including container orchestration and infrastructure as code.
You have a strong understanding of relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL, as well as distributed systems and microservices architecture patterns.
You have a proven track record of mentoring and leading other engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and collaborative problem-solving.
You have successfully collaborated within cross-functional teams, navigating ambiguity and aligning stakeholders around shared objectives.
You are capable of navigating significant technical ambiguity while developing concrete, actionable plans for complex product initiatives.
You are comfortable balancing exploratory greenfield development with the essential work of stabilizing and optimizing production systems.
You communicate clearly and persuasively, both in writing and verbally, when articulating technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
Direct experience with NestJS and mobile development using React Native is highly valued and demonstrates full-stack execution capability.
You have a history of shipping features that required sustained coordination with multiple engineering teams and stakeholders.
Familiarity with healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA, and the responsible handling of sensitive member data, is a significant professional advantage.
You have informally led technical direction, setting architecture and making key decisions for a pod without requiring a formal management title or direct authority.
Practical notes
This role is based in San Francisco and is a full-time position.
The compensation package includes a base salary of $180,000, with a target total compensation of $225,000 over a 4-year period.
