Engineering Manager, GI
Job description
Engineering Manager, GI at Hinge Health.
About the role
You will build a new engineering organization from the ground up to deliver the first digital GI care product at Hinge Health. You will own the end-to-end technical strategy for a new care vertical, translating clinical and product requirements into a performant, reliable mobile and backend stack. You will define the architecture, experiment roadmap, and delivery rituals that enable rapid learning in a regulated healthcare environment. You will partner deeply with licensed clinicians, designers, and marketers to ensure the technology directly improves member health outcomes. You will lead by example, balancing hands-on coding with coaching and mentorship to elevate the entire team. This role is for a builder who thrives at the intersection of healthcare, AI, and software innovation.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Build and lead a high-performing engineering team of 5+ engineers across React Native (Phoenix) mobile, backend services in Go, and JavaScript, establishing clear goals, rituals, and performance standards.
- Define the new vertical and product line from scratch, shaping the technical vision and product strategy for digital GI care with Hinge Health's AI-powered care model.
- Establish strong partnerships with Product, Design, and Marketing to align on strategy, experimentation roadmap, and success metrics that drive member engagement and health outcomes.
- Build the minimum loveable product (MLP) for the new vertical, integrating display software, AI solutions, and licensed care providers to deliver measurable health improvements.
- Run a rigorous portfolio of A/B experiments post-launch, planning and executing funnel optimizations to validate assumptions and ensure member success.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices for CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and client performance across the entire stack to maintain quality at speed.
- Contribute hands-on as a hands-on engineering leader, writing and reviewing code in modern stacks such as React Native, BFF/full-stack web, and GraphQL for ~15% of your time to maintain technical credibility.
- Grow and mentor your team, raising the bar on engineering quality, experimentation rigor, and operational excellence through coaching, feedback, and clear expectations.
- Think like a systems and UX strategist, aligning cross-functional partners on trade-offs between architecture, API design, client performance, and member experience in a regulated healthcare setting.
- Build an inclusive team culture where engineers can do their best work, providing direct feedback, clear communication, and opportunities for professional growth.
Requirements
- A minimum Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- A minimum of 3+ years of experience managing a team of ~5+ engineers in a fast-paced, product-focused environment.
- AI-native development: Expertise using tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or similar AI agents as development resources to drastically improve the pace of experimentation, with opinions on prompting, agent review, and harnessing engineering.
- Strong React Native, mobile, or client-side engineering background - or equivalent depth in a BFF/full-stack web context with a track record of shipping member-facing UI at scale.
- Experience building and operating consumer healthcare, virtual-first, or high-scale web applications in regulated environments.
- Demonstrated ability to run experiment-driven product development, using data and hypotheses to guide decisions and measure success.
- Fluency in modern web and mobile architectures, APIs, and performance optimization to guide technical direction and review critical design decisions.
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment while balancing innovation, reuse, and clear business results.
