Staff Software Engineer, Growth
Job description
Staff Software Engineer, Growth at Hinge Health.
About the role
This role is for a Staff Software Engineer who will join the Growth team at Hinge Health and own the technical strategy for the member-to-member referral program. The hire will define and execute the roadmap for the full referral stack, covering incentive mechanics, user flows, and the underlying data infrastructure. They will partner closely with product managers, data scientists, and designers to turn behavioral insights into scalable software solutions. The position requires a high level of ownership in balancing experimentation velocity with production reliability and long-term platform integrity. Success will be measured by the ability to drive measurable growth outcomes through technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own the technical direction and roadmap for the member referral platform across the full stack, from frontend user experiences to backend services and data pipelines.
- Scale incentive and referral systems to handle increasing member volume and complexity while preserving conversion rates and user experience.
- Integrate machine learning model outputs, such as propensity scores and personalized offers, into referral surfaces to improve targeting and effectiveness.
- Design, instrument, and analyze A/B experiments; collaborate with data science to close the feedback loop between model outputs and product outcomes.
- Partner with product, design, and analytics to define priorities, balancing short-term wins against long-term platform leverage and maintainability.
- Raise the engineering bar by enforcing code quality, system design standards, observability, and sound technical decision-making across the team.
- Work with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business goals into technical requirements and clearly communicate trade-offs and implementation plans.
- Mentor engineers at various levels by providing guidance on architecture, coding practices, and career development within the growth domain.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful time working on production systems at scale.
- Demonstrated experience designing or evolving systems that measurably shift user behavior through incentives, rewards, or social mechanics.
- Hands-on, full-stack depth with technologies such as React, React Native, TypeScript, NestJS, GraphQL, Node.js, relational and non-relational databases, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and Redis.
- Fluency in most of the technologies listed above, even if not a perfect match on every tool in the stack.
- Experience integrating machine learning models into production systems, including model serving, feature pipelines, experimentation, and feedback loops.
- Proven ability to set technical direction for a team, influence cross-functional roadmaps, and make architectural decisions that remain robust over time.
- Comfort working in regulated-data environments such as healthcare, with an understanding of the implications for security, privacy, and compliance.
Nice to have
- Prior experience designing and scaling incentive, rewards, or referral systems that drive measurable user and business outcomes.
- Deep engagement with experimentation platforms, A/B testing frameworks, or ML feature stores.
- Background in consumer growth-focused companies, especially e-commerce, marketplaces, or consumer apps with viral or referral mechanics.
- Direct experience working in healthcare or other environments involving regulated data.
Practical notes
- Location requires work from the San Francisco headquarters.
- Engagement is full-time.
- The role follows Hinge Health hybrid model, requiring in-office presence 3 days per week.
Why this role
- The position offers high ownership with low bureaucracy, enabling fast iteration and direct impact on member access to musculoskeletal care.
- The work has a clear line of sight to outcomes, such as the number of people accessing MSK care through Hinge Health.
- Engineers will tackle greenfield challenges in scaling referral infrastructure, integrating personalization, and evolving experimentation capabilities.
- Collaboration is deep and embedded, working alongside data science, product, and marketing partners who are aligned with the Growth team.
- This role is part of a mission to expand access to expert care using technology and data-driven growth strategies.
- The environment values technical excellence, including code quality, observability, and sound system design.
- Growth team members will see how their work directly contributes to scaling programs that bring new members into Hinge Health.
- The role provides opportunities to lead technical direction and mentor other engineers while maintaining a focus on measurable business impact.
