About the role
This role is for a Senior Engineering Manager who will lead a dedicated software engineering team inside Hardware R&D at Hinge Health, focusing exclusively on the software systems that power a connected medical device experience. The hire will own a single, high-complexity engineering squad responsible for mobile, backend, BLE, and hardware-adjacent software, ensuring the platform remains reliable, compliant, and adaptable for rapid product iteration in a regulated domain. You will partner deeply with Product, Clinical, Regulatory, Hardware Engineering, Data, Member Support, and Quality/Compliance to define strategy, execute against roadmap, and maintain end-to-end safety and delight for members. The role demands strong systems thinking to navigate mobile apps, cloud services, device-control, and BLE connectivity while balancing speed with the rigor required for medical devices. You will be a builder of teams and processes, establishing execution rhythms, quality standards, and cross-functional alignment so that the device software platform can scale without compromising compliance or user experience.

What you'll do
- Build a deep understanding of the device ecosystem, including FDA-regulated device software, BLE connectivity, mobile and backend platforms, and the clinical and operational workflows that support member care.
- Establish clear team priorities, execution rhythms, and ways of working, defining backlog quality, sprint planning, delivery goals, and retrospectives that drive consistent outcomes.
- Develop strong partnerships with Product, Clinical, Regulatory, Hardware Engineering, Data, Member Support, and Quality/Compliance counterparts to ensure alignment on goals, constraints, and quality expectations for every release.
- Orchestrate large cross-functional programs that span device, mobile, backend, and operations, proactively uncovering corner cases and non-functional risks related to reliability, security, performance, and scalability.
- Drive technical strategy across mobile, backend, device-control, and BLE surfaces so the platform can support both rapid product iteration and long-term maintainability without architectural drift.
- Establish robust quality and compliance practices for regulated software, including structured review points with regulatory and quality partners, release gating, tech debt paydown plans, and operational feedback loops that inform continuous improvement.
- Lead a team that owns production health in an on-call, continuous delivery environment, improving incident response, observability, and reliability through automation and clear runbooks.
- Translate member pain points, support signals, and product goals into concrete engineering investments that materially improve reliability, reduce support burden, and strengthen the member experience across the device products.
- Lead the software roadmap in close partnership with cross-functional stakeholders, balancing member experience, technical quality, operational reliability, and regulatory constraints while making transparent tradeoffs.
- Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging technical leaders, building a high-performance, high-accountability culture within a complex and high-ambiguity remit that spans hardware, software, and compliance interfaces.
- Contribute beyond your immediate team through interview design, leveling clarity, process improvements, and broader engineering stewardship across Hardware R&D and the wider engineering organization.
- Own end-to-end delivery for critical device software initiatives, coordinating dependencies, managing timelines, and communicating status clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Champion data-driven decision making by using telemetry, operational metrics, and support insights to prioritize work, validate hypotheses, and demonstrate impact over time.
- Ensure that software changes are delivered safely through regulated release processes, with appropriate testing, documentation, and compliance checks embedded in the delivery pipeline.
- Build and maintain a resilient, scalable architecture that supports new features, markets, and device form factors while adhering to security and privacy best practices.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or possess equivalent practical experience that demonstrates the same depth of knowledge.
- Bring 5+ years of experience leading and managing engineering teams, including managing 5+ direct reports through hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
- Have direct experience delivering production software for connected devices, BLE-enabled systems, device-control flows, or working in close partnership with firmware and hardware engineering teams.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of how to build and operate software for regulated environments where safety, reliability, and compliance are non-negotiable.
- Show evidence of thriving in high-ambiguity, high-accountability environments where priorities can shift quickly and clear judgment is required.
- Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make complex technical concepts accessible to clinical, regulatory, and executive stakeholders.
- Have a proven track record of building and sustaining high-performing engineering teams, with a focus on quality, ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Be comfortable using data, telemetry, and support signals to drive decisions and improvements in production systems and member-facing experiences.
Nice to have
- Experience with healthcare, HIPAA, GDPR, FDA-regulated products, or other software in regulated environments.
- Track record of delivering complex, cross-functional programs in environments with high quality, reliability, or compliance expectations.
- Familiarity with modern mobile, backend, and production monitoring tools commonly used in device software development.
Practical notes
This role is based in San Francisco at our headquarters, requires full-time engagement, and involves on-call responsibilities as part of production health ownership. Travel is not expected as part of this role. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship at this time.
