We collaborate with various engineering teams to research and develop next-generation printers and materials, employing engineering principles, physics, and experimental methods to create precise and aesthetically pleasing parts. We are seeking a systems-oriented individual who thrives in a multidisciplinary setting to join us as an R&D Print Process Engineering Intern.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and innovate new techniques for 3D printing, including developing novel printer architectures and validating subtle adjustments in galvo control.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement enhancements to existing products, such as redesigning algorithms for support structures based on experimental findings.
- Assess the performance of current printers to identify potential areas for enhancement.
- Design and conduct experiments, utilizing the results to inform improvements in both software and hardware components.
- Address complex, open-ended challenges that span multiple engineering disciplines.
- Analyze data to question existing assumptions and support findings with empirical evidence.
- Work independently to conduct research and develop solutions.
- Engage in hands-on prototyping and mechanical design tasks.
Requirements
- A strong willingness to challenge assumptions and validate them with data.
- Proven ability to work autonomously on research projects.
- Experience in experimental design and data analysis methodologies.
- Proficiency in programming and scientific computing, preferably in Python or Matlab.
- Familiarity with mechanical design principles, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping.
- Previous experience working on consumer products.
- Ability to develop physics-based models of intricate systems.

- Experience with 3D printing technologies and processes.
- Background in materials science or engineering.
- Knowledge of software development practices and tools.
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability principles.
- Previous internship experience in a related field.

Practical notes
- Internship Term: Fall (September 14
- December 18).

Compensation: Interns at Form Labs receive bi-weekly payments, with a salary range between $1,575 and $1,950 USD per week, depending on qualifications, experience, and expected contributions. This role assumes a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. Please note that housing or relocation assistance is not provided.
