This role is centered on making a direct impact in the lives of students by supporting their academic and social growth in a structured after-school environment. You will own the experience of each student you interact with, ensuring they feel welcomed, safe, and engaged from the moment they arrive until they are picked up. You are responsible for designing and facilitating dynamic group activities that promote teamwork, physical activity, and creativity while adapting your approach to meet the needs of different age groups. You will also act as a key communicator, building trust with parents and teachers by providing consistent updates and maintaining accurate records of attendance and behavior. Ultimately, you are the positive presence that helps students transition from the school day to a productive and enjoyable afternoon.

What you'll do
Design and lead a diverse array of group activities that include physical education, team-building exercises, creative arts, and hands-on STEM projects to keep students engaged and active.
Provide targeted homework assistance and small-group tutoring to help students grasp core academic concepts and develop effective study habits during after-school hours.
Supervise student transitions between classrooms, snack periods, and recreational play while enforcing safety rules and promoting a respectful, inclusive atmosphere.
Implement proactive behavior management strategies to support a safe environment and adhere strictly to program safety protocols and check-out procedures.
Assist with daily operational tasks such as taking attendance, preparing materials for activities, and organizing the learning space to ensure readiness for each session.
Serve as the primary point of contact for parents during pick-up, delivering professional and concise updates on student progress, behavior, and any concerns.
Maintain accurate and timely records of attendance and student behavior to support program reporting and communication with school partners.
Collaborate with other site staff and program coordinators to ensure smooth daily operations and to support the overall goals of the after-school program.
Adapt activities and communication styles to meet the needs of various age groups, ensuring that each student remains motivated and included.
Build your schedule by picking up assignments that match your availability, giving you control over when and how often you work.
Requirements
You must have completed at least 48 college credits to be eligible for this position.
Prior experience in a classroom or childcare setting is strongly preferred and will be considered a significant advantage.
Bilingual skills in Spanish are a plus and can enhance your ability to connect with a broader range of students and families.
You must pass a comprehensive background check as a condition of working with students.
You are required to follow all safety and reporting guidelines mandated by the program and local regulations.
You must complete all required school clearances, for which you are solely responsible for any associated costs.
You must be available to work in the San Jose area and travel to assigned school sites as needed.
You must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods while performing your duties.
You must comply with all mandates related to child safety, including mandated reporter training and obligations.
Nice to have
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is a preferred qualification.
Experience with Restorative Behavioral Therapy (RBT) is a plus and may support your success in this role.
Practical notes
This is a contract position with flexible scheduling, allowing you to work 2-5 days per week.
Shifts occur after school, typically from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, depending on site assignments.
You have the flexibility to pick up assignments that fit your personal schedule, making this role ideal for a side hustle or consistent income.
Costs related to background checks and clearances are the responsibility of the contractor.
The average cost for clearances in California ranges from $203 to $218.
This role is conducted as an independent contractor relationship under 1099 guidelines.
All applicants must undergo a video interview and a virtual orientation session conducted live via Zoom.
You must obtain necessary school clearances prior to working with students.
