Wastewater Project Engineer

About the role

You will own the technical and client-facing delivery of municipal wastewater infrastructure projects from initial scoping through final construction support. You will serve as a key technical resource for municipal clients, translating complex engineering concepts into clear, actionable project plans and reports. You will lead the evaluation, planning, and design of collection systems, pumping facilities, and treatment processes in alignment with regulatory expectations. You will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure project deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality. You will actively manage client communications, fostering strong relationships and ensuring their needs are met throughout every phase of project execution. You will contribute to business development and marketing efforts by providing technical insights and compelling proposals. You will participate in internal initiatives and cross-disciplinary collaboration to advance the firm's goals in water and environmental services. You will leverage the expertise of senior technical staff and managers to continuously grow your skills and deliver exceptional results.

What you'll do

Lead the scoping and feasibility assessment for wastewater infrastructure projects, defining project parameters and objectives in collaboration with municipal stakeholders.

Perform detailed evaluation and analysis of existing collection systems, identifying deficiencies and opportunities for improvement through data review and field assessments.

Develop design plans and specifications for collection system upgrades, including gravity and force main segments, manholes, and related infrastructure.

Conduct hydraulic modeling and analysis of pumping station systems to optimize performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.

Design wastewater treatment process upgrades and evaluate alternative technologies to meet regulatory requirements and performance goals.

Create rehabilitation and renewal plans for aging infrastructure, incorporating trenchless technologies and other innovative methods where applicable.

Develop comprehensive asset management plans that align infrastructure investment with long-term community needs and funding strategies.

Prepare responses to requests for proposals, technical questionnaires, and client presentations, highlighting technical expertise and understanding of municipal needs.

Support the preparation of environmental permits and regulatory documentation in coordination with state and local authorities.

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members, contributing to the overall growth and development of the project team.

Coordinate project schedules, deliverables, and budgets to ensure timely execution and client satisfaction across multiple simultaneous engagements.

Represent Woodard & Curran in all client interactions, demonstrating professionalism, responsiveness, and a solutions-oriented mindset.

Identify opportunities to enhance business development efforts by showcasing completed work and technical capabilities to prospective clients.

Participate in internal knowledge-sharing sessions, practice area meetings, and cross-office collaborations to advance firm-wide expertise in water and wastewater services.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.

You must be a licensed Professional Engineer in at least one U.S. state, with the ability to obtain additional state licenses as required for project work.

You must have a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater collection, treatment, or related infrastructure design.

You must have demonstrated experience preparing engineering reports, calculations, and design documents for submission to regulatory agencies.

You must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information to non-technical audiences.

You must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced skills in Excel for data analysis and modeling.

You must be able to manage multiple project tasks simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.

You must be willing and able to travel as required, including up to 10% local travel within Massachusetts and the New England region.

Nice to have

Experience with a broad range of practice areas, including collection systems, pumping facilities, treatment systems, master planning, and permitting.

Familiarity with trenchless technologies, such as pipe bursting, cured-in-place pipe, and other rehabilitation methods.

Experience with hydraulic modeling software, such as SWMM, H2OMAP, or similar tools.

Knowledge of asset management planning and related municipal water and wastewater programs.

Experience supporting business development and proposal efforts for municipal clients.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position with a flexible remote/hybrid work schedule, expecting 2 to 3 days in the office or onsite with clients.

Travel is expected to be up to 10%, primarily within Massachusetts and the broader New England region.
