Controller
Job description
About the role
This role manages end to end accounting execution and compliance for a fast moving team. Close oversight on money movement and reporting accuracy protects the business and supports product operations. Work aligns with strict monthly and annual calendar cycles. The position demands rigorous oversight over the general ledger and ensures that every transaction maintains traceability and control. You will act as the final checkpoint before financial data influences major strategic choices. The environment requires comfort with high volume transaction processing and strict adherence to regulatory standards. Your analysis will directly influence the confidence of internal stakeholders in the integrity of financial results. You will partner closely with product and operations to embed financial logic into core business workflows.
Key facts
What you'll do
Accounting timelines follow monthly closes and annual planning cycles, and every deliverable must remain auditable. Financial results stay accurate because the team keeps ledgers and reconciliations precise through hands on use of accounting systems and close tools. Money movement operates as core product logic so finance informs real time business decisions. You will own the design of control frameworks that govern how funds are processed and reported across the platform. Responsibility for variance analysis falls to this role, where differences between forecast and actual drive corrective action. The hire will define and standardize documentation for accounting policies to ensure consistency across reporting cycles. You will oversee the implementation of new accounting platforms and ensure seamless integration with existing financial infrastructure. Ownership of month end close activities includes managing the cut off process and ensuring timely resolution of pending items. You will coordinate directly with external auditors to validate internal controls and streamline the audit evidence collection process. The role requires building dashboards that track key financial metrics and provide transparency into cash and operational performance.
Requirements
Five or more years in accounting and controllership roles, ideally inside fast growing startups, are required. Certified Public Accountant or equivalent rigor is demanded to ensure detail in every line item. Direct experience with close processes, reconciliations, and accounting platforms is mandatory for success. Comfort treating money movement as central product logic is required instead of treating it as peripheral. High ownership and autonomy are required, with a bias for fixing broken processes independently. US work authorization is mandatory, and candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree as a baseline qualification. Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment is essential for maintaining accuracy under pressure. Experience with audit cycles and internal control testing is required to sustain compliance and transparency. The candidate must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication to articulate complex financial concepts to non financial partners. A methodical approach to problem solving and data validation is required to prevent errors before they impact reporting.
Practical notes
The role requires US work authorization and a Bachelor's degree as a baseline. Typical interview steps
Finance interviews usually include technical questions on accounting or modeling, a case study, and behavioral rounds. Candidates may be asked to build a forecast or explain a variance. Spreadsheet skills are tested in most loops. Accuracy and clear explanations matter. Interviewers may give a real dataset and ask for a quick analysis. Showing your work and explaining assumptions matters as much as the final number.
Good to know
Finance roles rely on precision early and business partnership later. Teams often use spreadsheets, accounting platforms, and financial models to communicate performance. Understanding company operations beyond numbers accelerates career progression. Tools for modeling performance and managing close activities integrate into daily workflows. Clear explanations of assumptions and work matter as much as the final number during reviews.
Questions to ask
Useful questions for the interview: what a typical week looks like, how work is assigned, what tools the team uses, and how feedback works. Asking how the role has changed recently and what the team wishes it had known when joining is also reasonable. Questions about the manager's priorities are especially valued.
Career growth
Finance careers move from analyst to senior analyst, manager, and controller or FP&A director levels. Some people earn certifications such as CPA or CFA. Cross-functional work with operations and leadership grows with seniority. Finance careers reward precision early and business partnership later. Learning the operations of the company beyond the numbers accelerates growth.
