About the role
You will own the end-to-end financial operating system for A16z as the Corporate Controller, driving firmwide accounting, treasury, and consolidation with precision and scalability. You will architect and execute the controls, processes, and systems that ensure accurate, timely, and actionable financial data across a complex multi-entity investment management structure. This role demands operational excellence as you lead the modernization of financial workflows, reduce manual effort, and future-proof the infrastructure supporting billions in assets. You will act as the central technical and operational leader for corporate finance, translating strategic objectives into robust financial systems and disciplined execution. You will partner deeply with Fund Finance, Tax, HR, Legal, IT, and vertical leaders to standardize policies and streamline cross-functional processes. Given A16z's scale and global footprint, your work will directly shape the firm's ability to report transparently and make high-impact decisions.

What you'll do
Lead the design, implementation, and oversight of corporate accounting operations, including general ledger, fixed assets, intercompany transactions, and period-end close.
Own the full treasury function, managing cash and liquidity, banking relationships, and risk oversight within a multi-entity, multi-currency structure.
Spearhead firmwide financial consolidation, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant reporting for the management company and affiliated entities.
Partner with Fund Finance to coordinate capital calls, distributions, carried interest calculations, and waterfall mechanics across diverse fund structures.
Define and drive the roadmap for Workday, Navan, and Planful, improving automation, data integrity, and user experience across finance operations.
Build and mentor a high-performing finance team, establishing clear ownership, development goals, and a culture of accountability and excellence.
Develop and enforce financial policies, controls, and internal audit processes that mitigate risk and support scalable growth.
Collaborate with Tax and Legal to ensure entity formation, compliance, and reporting align with regulatory requirements and A16z's operational model.
Modernize financial reporting pipelines, reducing manual work and increasing the speed, accuracy, and clarity of insights for firm leadership.
Champion data architecture initiatives that strengthen auditability, system integration, and long-term scalability of financial systems.
Own budgeting, forecasting, and scenario analysis processes, translating business strategy into actionable financial models and variance insights.
Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, ensuring clean audits, timely responses, and continuous improvement in audit quality and efficiency.
Implement best practices in financial process documentation, enabling continuity, scalability, and seamless cross-team collaboration.
Drive adoption of new tools and workflows, balancing innovation with stability to support both current operations and future growth.
Act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership and the board, translating complex financial data into clear, concise, and decision-ready narratives.
Requirements
Demonstrate experience owning the financial operations of a complex investment management or asset management organization with multiple entities.
Possess deep technical accounting expertise, including general ledger, consolidation, intercompany, and period-end close at scale.
Show a proven track record of leading finance teams in venture capital, private equity, or similarly complex multi-entity environments.
Have hands-on experience with Workday, Navan, and Planful, or a demonstrated ability to oversee large-scale system implementations in finance.
Exhibit strong leadership skills, with the ability to build, develop, and motivate high-performing finance professionals across diverse functions.
Bring experience partnering with Tax, Legal, HR, and IT to align financial processes with regulatory and operational requirements.
Display exceptional attention to detail, judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Communicate effectively at all levels, translating technical financial concepts into clear insights for both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
Nice to have
Experience in the venture capital or broader alternative investment industry, working with innovative, high-growth portfolio companies.
Familiarity with A16z's focus areas, including AI, bio-health, consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, and games.
Practical notes
This role requires an in-office presence 2-3 days a week in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office.
