About the role
You will own the complete accounting lifecycle and ensure that every financial process at Laurel is robust, auditable, and optimized for scale. You will design and implement the controls and infrastructure that allow our AI time platform to operate with precision and transparency. You will partner closely with the CFO to translate strategic business goals into financial plans and reporting frameworks. You will lead the automation of repetitive finance tasks, leveraging AI to improve accuracy and speed across the organization. You will establish the policies and documentation that define how the finance function operates today and into the future. You will build trusted relationships with external auditors and key partners to ensure compliance and confidence. You will mentor junior finance team members and set the standard for excellence in financial operations. You will play a central role in preparing the company for the next stages of growth, including fundraising and a potential public offering.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead the end-to-end management of all accounting operations and the monthly close process from transaction recording to financial reporting.
- Design and implement scalable accounting policies, controls, and reporting infrastructure that align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee all external audit activities and manage relationships with the external accounting partner to ensure timely and accurate audits.
- Drive process automation and identify opportunities for AI-enabled efficiencies that reduce manual effort and improve reliability across the finance function.
- Build, develop, and mentor the future accounting team, setting clear expectations, performance standards, and career pathways.
- Partner strategically with the CFO and executive leadership to support fundraising readiness, operational scaling, and long-term public company preparation.
- Own the development and maintenance of financial models, forecasts, and dashboards that provide insight into business performance and inform decision-making.
- Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and consistency of financial data across systems, including those powered by AI and automation.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators for the finance function, focusing on quality, timeliness, and compliance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business initiatives into financial plans, analyze impacts, and guide execution.
- Implement and improve financial systems and tools that streamline workflows and support scalable growth.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for auditors, investors, and other stakeholders on financial controls and reporting matters.
- Define and standardize documentation for accounting processes to ensure clarity, consistency, and continuity.
- Contribute to the development of long-term financial strategy and the execution of initiatives that support sustainable growth.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or actively pursuing CPA certification.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a people management role.
- Demonstrated experience building and scaling finance functions in a high-growth environment.
- Strong expertise in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency with accounting software and enterprise systems, including general ledger platforms and financial reporting tools.
- Experience managing external audit processes and relationships with public accounting firms.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver accurate results in a fast-paced setting.
- Comfort with process improvement, automation, and the application of technology to enhance financial operations.
- Willingness to relocate to or work from our New York, NY office and comply with standard employment eligibility requirements.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI-powered finance tools or platforms that automate data capture or reporting.
- Background in professional services, including accounting or law firms, and familiarity with their billing and timekeeping processes.
- Experience supporting fundraising activities, including preparing financial materials and investor reporting.
- Familiarity with frameworks for preparing public company financial statements and disclosures.
Practical notes
This role is full-time and based in New York, NY. There may be occasional travel required within the work location parameters. Employment eligibility to work in the required country without sponsorship is required, and visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
