About the role
The Assistant Controller will provide leadership and coordination of property financial statements for a group of clients. This role leads a team of accountants and maintains regular interaction with clients and external auditors. Together with other Assistant Controllers, the position ensures accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. The hire will supervise the preparation of accurate and timely financial reports while driving process improvements within the team. This role requires a proactive approach to resolving complex accounting issues and supporting continuous learning across the department. The Assistant Controller plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of financial data and fostering strong client relationships.

What you'll do
- Supervise the accounting procedures for a designated team of accountants, ensuring adherence to internal controls and deadlines.
- Oversee the preparation and delivery of financial statements within established client timelines, maintaining high accuracy standards.
- Review and reconcile monthly bank statements to validate the completeness and correctness of recorded transactions.
- Analyze operating results against budget and forecast, highlighting significant variances and underlying drivers for discussion.
- Coordinate directly with operational team members to collect property data and support the production of comprehensive rent rolls.
- Lead the month-end closing process by monitoring task completion and resolving any outstanding accounting entries or adjustments.
- Communicate regularly with clients to discuss property financial performance and address detailed accounting inquiries or concerns.
- Perform detailed reviews of general ledger activity to ensure compliance with established accounting policies and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with external auditors by coordinating documentation requests and facilitating the testing of financial controls.
- Mentor and develop junior accounting staff through guidance, feedback, and support in technical accounting practices.
- Track key performance indicators related to financial reporting and identify opportunities for automation or efficiency gains.
- Ensure all financial reporting aligns with asset classification guidelines and property-level accounting requirements.
- Support special projects such as year-end audits, system implementations, or process enhancements as requested by leadership.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with tax, lease administration, and operational teams to resolve complex accounting matters.
- Maintain thorough documentation of accounting procedures and workflows to support consistency and audit readiness.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field is required.
- Current CPA certification or eligibility is required.
- Minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated experience in multifamily property accounting or real estate environments is required.
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and property-level financial reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems is mandatory.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with clients and team members.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced remote environment.
