Accounting Lead
Job description
About the role
Trawa is seeking an Accounting Lead to drive the evolution of our finance operations in support of our ambitious mission. The successful candidate will be responsible for building a robust and scalable accounting function that aligns with our rapid growth in the energy sector. This role requires a deep commitment to excellence in financial operations and a passion for process improvement. You will be instrumental in shaping the financial infrastructure that supports our green energy initiatives. The position demands a high level of ownership and strategic thinking to navigate the complexities of the German energy market. Your work will directly influence how efficiently and accurately we manage our financial lifecycle from quote to cash.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Redesign the end-to-end Quote-to-Cash (Q2C) process, taking ownership of invoicing, accounts receivable, and dunning to transform reactive firefighting into a scalable, structured workflow.
- Own the full Revenue Recognition policy for diverse energy products such as PPA, spot, futures, and direct marketing, ensuring alignment with auditing standards and regulatory requirements.
- Architect the structure of billing-relevant customer and contract data across all integrated systems to ensure accuracy and accessibility for financial operations.
- Lead the monthly and annual close process under HGB, managing your team to execute tasks while maintaining the highest standards of quality and consistency.
- Coordinate tax matters with external advisors, oversee VAT compliance, and strengthen internal controls to safeguard the company's financial integrity.
- Partner with Business Ops and Technology to identify and implement automation opportunities within core Accounting processes, reducing manual effort and increasing reliability.
- Create comprehensive documentation, including process descriptions, close checklists, controls, and audit trails, to ensure the organization is always audit-ready.
- Collaborate with external advisors to define energy-specific accounting principles that reflect the unique nature of our product offerings and market dynamics.
- Serve as the single point of contact for our external auditors, leading our first full external audit from preparation through conclusion with confidence and precision.
- Mentor and develop your team, providing clear structure, prioritization, and project delivery guidance that elevates the entire department's performance.
- Act as a cross-functional liaison, working closely with Business Ops, Sales, Technology, Treasury, FP&A, tax advisors, and auditors to ensure alignment on financial and operational goals.
- Establish a clear roadmap for audit readiness, documentation completeness, internal control enhancement, and the target data model for Accounting operations.
Requirements
- Possess 6 or more years of hands-on Accounting experience with a strong foundation in HGB, including proven ownership of monthly and annual close cycles and prior audit experience.
- Demonstrate a history of structurally redesigning the Quote-to-Cash process, including invoicing, AR, dunning, and revenue recognition, rather than merely executing existing workflows.
- Have led at least two direct reports, taking full responsibility for hiring, performance management, coaching, and professional development, with clear evidence of team growth under your leadership.
- Exhibit a process design and automation mindset, showing a preference for modern, lean tool stacks and a continuous drive to improve operational efficiency.
- Maintain business-fluent proficiency in both English and German at B2+ level, ensuring effective communication regarding HGB, DATEV, tax advisors, and auditors.
- Bring a high level of ownership and accountability to the role, with the ability to operate independently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Show resilience and adaptability when managing complex energy market regulations and evolving business requirements.
- Commit to building transparent and well-documented financial processes that enhance auditability and reduce operational risk.
- Align with the mission of enabling mid-sized companies to transition to green energy through intelligent processes and modern tooling.
Nice to have
- Previous experience in the energy market, specifically with products such as PPA, spot trading, futures, or direct marketing.
- Participation in an ERP selection project or a full rollout of an enterprise resource planning system.
- Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and their application in complex scenarios.
- Hands-on experience with specific tools in our operational stack, including DATEV, Moss, Airtable, n8n, and Langdock.
