What you'll do

• Lead the preconstruction phase for MEP systems, ensuring alignment with project goals and client expectations.
• Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to develop comprehensive MEP designs that meet project specifications.
• Conduct thorough reviews of project documents, identifying potential challenges and proposing solutions to mitigate risks.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates for MEP systems, utilizing industry-standard software and methodologies to ensure accuracy.
• Manage the procurement process for MEP subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring timely and cost-effective sourcing of materials and services.
• Facilitate value engineering sessions to explore cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or performance.
• Coordinate with the construction team to ensure seamless transition from preconstruction to construction phases, maintaining open lines of communication.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
• Stay updated on industry trends, codes, and regulations to ensure compliance and best practices are followed in all projects.
• Participate in client meetings and presentations, effectively communicating MEP strategies and solutions to stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to enhance collaboration and project success.
• Contribute to the overall strategic planning and growth of the preconstruction department within The Weitz Company.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in MEP preconstruction or related roles within the construction industry.
• Proven track record of successfully managing MEP projects from preconstruction through completion.
• Strong knowledge of MEP systems, construction processes, and relevant building codes and regulations.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
• Proficiency in estimating software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to travel as needed for project site visits and client meetings.

Nice to have

• Professional certifications such as LEED AP, PMP, or similar credentials.
• Experience with building information modeling (BIM) and other advanced construction technologies.
• Familiarity with sustainable design practices and energy-efficient systems.
• Previous experience working in a variety of sectors, including commercial, residential, and industrial projects.
• Knowledge of local construction market trends and key players in the Des Moines area.

• Proficient in MEP design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks) and estimating tools (e.g., Sage, ProEst).
• Strong understanding of project management principles and methodologies.
• Familiarity with contract negotiation and management processes.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications accurately.
• Competence in using project management software to track progress and manage resources effectively.
