What you'll do
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for a variety of construction projects, including commercial, residential, and industrial sectors.
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost breakdowns.
- Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to gather necessary information and clarify project requirements.
- Conduct market research to assess material and labor costs, ensuring that estimates are based on current market conditions.
- Prepare and present bid proposals, including detailed explanations of costs and methodologies to clients and stakeholders.
- Review and evaluate subcontractor proposals, ensuring that they align with project requirements and budget constraints.
- Monitor project budgets and expenditures throughout the construction process, providing updates and recommendations as needed.
- Utilize advanced estimating software and tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency in the estimation process.
- Participate in project meetings and provide insights on cost-related issues, helping to facilitate decision-making.
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, bids, and project changes to support future reference and audits.
- Mentor junior estimators and provide guidance on best practices in estimating and project management.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices to enhance the estimating process and improve overall project outcomes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in construction estimating, with a proven track record of successful project bids.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Proficiency in estimating software and tools, such as Sage Estimating, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Familiarity with local building codes, regulations, and permitting processes in Iowa.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Nice to have
- Professional certification such as Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) or similar credentials.
- Experience with sustainable building practices and green construction methods.
- Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools, such as Primavera or Microsoft Project.
- Previous experience in a leadership or mentoring role within an estimating team.
- Familiarity with contract negotiation and management processes.
