Adjunct Instructor, Calgary Skilled Trades and Technologies Program

About the role

You will own the design and delivery of immersive, hands-on learning experiences that introduce high school students to foundational concepts in skilled trades. You will foster an environment where excitement about education, a sense of belonging, preparedness for the future, and confidence in succeeding are actively developed. This role requires you to be a passionate and experienced educator who can translate industry practices into engaging, project-based activities for young learners. You will collaborate with a team dedicated to creating transformative learning environments that provide access to and support post-secondary journeys. Your instruction will take place in a purpose-built trades learning environment on Sait's campus, utilizing specialized tools and facilities. You will play a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation of skilled trades professionals through direct, practical guidance. Success in this position means you can effectively guide students through structured pathways into skilled trades and technology careers. Your work will directly contribute to the mission of Sait Youth Initiatives in educating, empowering, and exciting young minds.

What you'll do

Plan and sequence learning activities that guide high school students through trades exploration in construction-related fields.

Deliver engaging, industry-informed instruction using a hands-on, project-based approach within a purpose-built trades learning environment.

Facilitate student understanding of electrical systems through practical activities involving conduit runs, junction boxes, outlets, switches, and a functional breaker system.

Guide learners in plumbing applications by having them work with supply and drain lines, fixtures, and fittings.

Lead sessions on HVAC fundamentals where students manipulate ductwork, registers, and mock thermostats to understand system dynamics.

Instruct students in drywall installation processes, including hanging, taping, mudding, and sanding sheetrock to achieve professional finishes.

Coach participants in finishing carpentry techniques, focusing on the installation of trim, molding, and casing to complete projects.

Implement safety protocols and industry-standard practices within the classroom and lab settings to ensure a secure learning environment.

Assess student progress through observation, feedback, and evaluation of completed projects, adapting instruction to meet diverse learning needs.

Collaborate with academic services teams to align curriculum with program goals that provide authentic and meaningful learning experiences.

Support the development of a sense of excitement about education by making complex trade concepts accessible and engaging for youth.

Promote a sense of belonging by creating an inclusive classroom culture where all students feel valued and supported in their learning journey.

Requirements

You must possess a Red Seal certification or equivalent trade qualification relevant to the instructed trades areas.

You must have a minimum of three years of recent, practical experience working in the construction trades.

You must hold a valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.

You must be able to pass a criminal background check and vulnerability screening as required for work with minors.

You must be legally authorized to work in Canada and possess the right to obtain necessary security clearance.

You must be able to commit to the full duration of the program, with consistent availability for scheduled teaching sessions until January 1, 2027.

You must demonstrate the ability to instruct high school students in a hands-on, safety-conscious environment.

You must have strong communication skills to explain technical procedures and concepts to learners new to the trades.

Nice to have

Experience teaching or working in a secondary school environment.

Familiarity with current trends and technologies in the construction and skilled trades industry.

Experience with project-based learning curriculum development.

This is a SAFA Adjunct

Non-Approved Program position.

Hourly compensation is set at $80.00, with placement within the range typically based upon a review of skills, experience, and internal equity.

The position is scheduled to conclude on January 1, 2027.
