Eyewear Designer
Job description
About the role
You own the look, feel, and design identity of Pair Eyewear's frames from first sketch to production-ready definition. This role is concept-driven, placing you at the creative center where your point of view on style will shape the entire frame collection. You will define aesthetic direction, invent new shapes, and translate hand-drawn ideas into cohesive, on-trend collections. You partner closely with development to ensure concepts move toward production without losing design intent. Your curiosity about eyewear, fashion, and materials will keep the work fresh and distinct in a competitive market. You bring the discipline to run multiple designs in parallel while maintaining a clear, compelling visual narrative. You are the steward of the Pair brand, ensuring every frame expresses its unique character through form, proportion, and material truth. If you have an eye for form and a love of eyewear, this is the role where your work will be seen and felt.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Define the look, feel, and design identity of Pair's frames, steering overall aesthetic direction and the details of each shape.
- Conceptualize and develop new frame designs through sketching, illustration, hand-drawing, and digital rendering to communicate ideas vividly.
- Explore form, proportion, silhouette, and style across the collection to ensure depth and coherence in every release.
- Direct materials, color, and finish (CMF), selecting and combining acetate, metal, and mixed materials to express each design intention.
- Develop balanced, on-trend collections that align with the Pair brand and the product roadmap while respecting timelines and business goals.
- Partner with the product development team to carry concepts from idea through to production, safeguarding design intent at every stage.
- Research eyewear, fashion, and materials trends, and study competitor products to keep the line fresh, relevant, and distinct.
- Present design concepts and direction clearly to cross-functional partners, ensuring alignment and shared understanding.
- Own the visual language of collections, creating narrative and continuity across individual frames and entire ranges.
- Iterate quickly based on feedback, balancing creativity with manufacturability and brand coherence.
- Maintain a living library of ideas, sketches, and references that fuel future concepts and long-term design strategy.
- Support design exploration for potential seasonal drops, limited editions, and experimental material applications.
- Collaborate with marketing and brand teams to ensure design storytelling is consistent across campaigns and retail experiences.
- Continuously evaluate your own work and seek growth, using critique and research to evolve your point of view and strengthen the Pair frame language.
Requirements
- You must have direct eyewear industry experience designing frames, with a proven track record in this specific discipline.
- You must hold a degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Fashion Design, or a related field, with design school strongly preferred; equivalent professional experience is considered.
- You must demonstrate strong hand-drawing, illustration, and digital sketching skills using tools such as Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
- You must possess a strong sense of form, proportion, brand aesthetic, and color and material/finish coordination.
- You must have working knowledge of eyewear materials and construction methods, enough to design with manufacturability firmly in mind.
- You must present a portfolio showcasing original eyewear and frame design work, covering concept through finished product.
- You must be comfortable working within a product calendar, managing multiple design projects simultaneously without compromising quality.
- You must align with Pair's brand values and understand the importance of inclusive, respectful workplace behaviors in a diverse environment.
Nice to have
- Experience designing for a direct-to-consumer or wholesale retail or high-volume eyewear brand, understanding their unique demands.
- Specialized eyewear-design training or apprenticeships that deepen your technical and creative expertise.
- A background in trend or CMF research, helping you anticipate shifts and lead rather than follow style movements.
- Familiarity with optical basics and prescription frame considerations, enabling more informed and practical design decisions.
Practical notes
This is a full-time role based at the Irvine Production Facility. No specific hours, travel requirements, visa details, or application deadlines are stated in the source material.
