About the role

You will spearhead the evolution of a critical care service that defines standards of excellence across Atlantic Canada. This role immerses you in a brand-new, 17,000 sq. ft. specialty and emergency hospital where your clinical judgment will directly shape protocols and outcomes. You will collaborate daily with a diverse medical team comprising internists, radiologists, dermatologists, anesthesiologists, ophthalmologists, surgeons, and a dedicated emergency department, all committed to a unified vision. The position offers a unique chance to build a teaching relationship with the Atlantic Veterinary College while leveraging a partnership with the Canadian Animal Blood Bank to expand resource availability. You will own the development of ICU workflows, ensuring that care delivery aligns with the hospital's design and advanced equipment capabilities. The role requires active participation in a structured rotation for weekend coverage, ensuring continuity of care for a diverse case load. You will have the opportunity to influence departmental culture, fostering teamwork, learning, and excellence alongside ICU-focused RVTs. What you'll do

Establish and refine critical care protocols that align with the hospital's state-of-the-art facilities and high standards of veterinary medicine.

Perform comprehensive assessments and interventions for critically ill patients, utilizing advanced monitoring and treatment modalities available in the dedicated ICU.

Lead the integration of ICU-focused respiratory and circulatory support strategies, ensuring optimal patient outcomes in emergency scenarios.

Collaborate with the emergency department to streamline triage and stabilization processes, enhancing the efficiency of critical care delivery.

Coordinate with the internal medicine team to manage complex comorbidities and ensure cohesive, multidisciplinary patient management.

Utilize advanced imaging and diagnostic capabilities, including CT and MRI, to guide critical decision-making and refine diagnostic accuracy.

Develop and implement training initiatives for RVTs and veterinary professionals to elevate the standard of critical care practice within the hospital.

Liaise with the Canadian Animal Blood Bank to optimize blood product availability and transfusion medicine protocols for critical patients.

Participate in the teaching relationship with the Atlantic Veterinary College, contributing to the education of future veterinary professionals.

Oversee the utilization of specialized equipment, such as high-flow oxygen and Snyder kennels, to maintain a high level of intensive care.

Guide the expansion of service offerings in alignment with the upcoming launch of dentistry and cardiology services in 2026.

Monitor and evaluate departmental performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and drive continuous quality enhancement.

Champion a culture of safety and teamwork, ensuring that ICU-focused RVTs and all staff operate within a supportive and learning-oriented environment.

Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with advancements in critical care medicine and veterinary emergency practices.

Requirements

Candidates must hold board certification in critical care or residency training in critical care to meet the eligibility criteria for this position.

Applicants are required to demonstrate a proven track record of delivering high-quality critical care in a clinical setting.

You must possess strong clinical judgment and the ability to make rapid, accurate decisions in high-pressure environments.

Effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and engaging in teaching activities with veterinary students.

A commitment to maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical veterinary practice is mandatory for success in this role.

You should have experience with advanced monitoring techniques and the interpretation of complex diagnostic data in critical patients.
