About the role
Optro is seeking a Database Administrator II to manage and maintain PostgreSQL databases in cloud environments. This role focuses on preserving the integrity, performance, and security of critical data platforms. The successful candidate will ensure high availability and operational stability for database services. You will work closely with development and operations teams to support the data infrastructure. The position involves both proactive maintenance and reactive troubleshooting in dynamic cloud settings. You will play a key role in automating repetitive database tasks to improve efficiency. This position requires a strong sense of ownership for production database health. You will contribute directly to the reliability of applications dependent on PostgreSQL data stores.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Administer and maintain PostgreSQL databases hosted on AWS RDS and Azure PostgreSQL services, ensuring configuration aligns with operational standards.
- Monitor database health using relevant metrics, keeping a close watch on performance, replication status, storage utilization, and overall availability.
- Support database provisioning activities, including the setup of new instances, executing upgrades, applying patching, and managing backup/recovery and disaster recovery procedures.
- Troubleshoot complex database issues such as slow queries, session blocking, deadlocks, replication lag, and unexpected connectivity disruptions.
- Assist with SQL performance tuning by analyzing execution plans and working collaboratively with application teams to achieve optimization goals.
- Manage database security protocols, user accounts, roles, and access controls to ensure compliance with internal and external policies.
- Help automate routine DBA tasks using Bash or Python scripting to reduce manual effort and potential for human error.
- Utilize monitoring tools like Grafana, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, and Prometheus to gather insights and drive data-informed decisions.
- Maintain operational documentation, runbooks, and standard procedures to support consistent operations and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to database incidents promptly and support continuous service availability.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and application teams to ensure database changes are integrated smoothly within the broader ecosystem.
- Evaluate and implement improvements to database processes, contributing to long-term stability and scalability initiatives.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Possess 2-3 years of direct experience administering PostgreSQL databases in production environments.
- Bring experience supporting PostgreSQL in AWS and/or Azure cloud environments, demonstrating familiarity with managed services.
- Show a solid understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, including backup and recovery strategies, replication mechanisms, and performance tuning principles.
- Have experience working with applications deployed in Kubernetes infrastructure and an understanding of how databases interact with containerized workloads.
- Demonstrate strong SQL troubleshooting and analytical capabilities when diagnosing query and system performance issues.
- Exhibit familiarity with monitoring, alerting, and incident management processes to ensure timely response to database events.
- Communicate effectively and collaborate well with cross-functional teams, including developers, engineers, and operations staff.
- Adhere to company policies and security standards, maintaining data integrity and confidentiality in all database operations.
- Be comfortable working independently and taking ownership of complex database problems from identification through resolution.
Nice to have
- Experience with AWS RDS PostgreSQL and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server, including configuration and maintenance of these specific platforms.
- Familiarity with PgBouncer or other connection pooling solutions to optimize database connection management.
- Experience with Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools for provisioning and managing database-related resources.
- Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices, particularly as they apply to database change management and deployment pipelines.
- Experience in Kubernetes-based environments, including the operation of databases within container orchestration platforms.
- Understanding of logical replication, CDC tools, and high availability architectures to support resilient data systems.
- Holding relevant PostgreSQL or cloud certifications that validate expertise in database administration and cloud services.
