About the role.
This role centers on owning the complete lifecycle of a feature, from the initial user signal through design, implementation, validation, and final release. You will be accountable for outcomes across multiple outdoor contexts, ensuring that behavior remains consistent and dependable whether someone is hunting, riding offroad, exploring backcountry terrain, or fishing. The position requires comfort with high ambiguity and the ability to exercise sharp judgment in deciding when to run experiments and when to scale successful patterns. You will guide product reliability and maintain a coherent experience across platforms and devices. In addition, you will partner closely with data and product stakeholders to translate user needs into technical specifications and measurable success criteria.

The work location for this position is Missoula, Montana, United States. Engagement with the role involves operating in fast cycles while managing ambiguity and maintaining alignment with distributed partners. Compensation for this position is set between one hundred twenty thousand dollars and one hundred fifty thousand dollars USD annually, adjusted for location, and includes equity as part of the total package.
What you'll do.
You will design intake workflows that capture user intent and context, translating raw signals into structured product requirements. This work directly shapes reliable product behavior across platforms and devices, reducing confusion and misalignment. You will architect and build components using Golang, Elixir, Rust, Postgres, and Mapbox, ensuring performance and correctness for demanding outdoor scenarios. These components must remain resilient under varied conditions, including limited connectivity and rapidly changing environments. Reviewing data and monitoring will be part of your regular responsibilities, enabling you to validate experiments and coordinate refinements that keep experiences dependable during rapid change. You will ship features through CI/CD patterns on GCP, with a focus on safe and incremental rollouts. This includes validating behavior on iOS SwiftUI and Android Jetpack Compose before broad release to production users. Partnership with data and product teams is essential, and you will align on instrumentation to enable clearer decisions and faster future iterations. You will champion testing practices that exercise mapping and ETL pipelines, reducing risk for features related to hunt, offroad, backcountry, and fish. Guarding quality will involve tracing issues from production back to design assumptions, shortening feedback loops for users in the field. You will enable experimentation by maintaining tooling that allows teams to run tests safely and observe genuine user behavior. AI assistance will be used where it meaningfully improves speed and insight, provided it aligns with responsible usage standards.
Requirements.
You must have between three and five years of experience building consumer facing applications that handle location and mapping complexity. This experience should demonstrate a clear understanding of how users interact with spatial data in real world contexts. You must be fluent in at least one frontend stack, with examples including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and VueJS, and you should have shipped production grade features using these technologies. You must also be fluent in at least one backend stack, with examples including Golang, Elixir, Rust, Postgres, and GCP, and you should have operated these technologies in a distributed environment. You must understand PostGIS and mapping concepts well enough to reason about performance and correctness for outdoor use cases, including how data models affect rendering and analysis. You must be comfortable working asynchronously across distributed teams, while maintaining high standards for code quality, reliability, and operational hygiene. You should be able to interpret ambiguous requirements and translate them into concrete experiments that generate validated learning. You must be willing to engage with stakeholders across product, data, and engineering, ensuring that shared goals are clearly understood and pursued.
Nice to have.
Experience contributing to open source projects that intersect with mapping, location, or outdoor domains is valued and may provide insight into the unique constraints of field usage. Familiarity with the workflows and constraints of outdoor enthusiasts, field teams, or land management organizations is considered a strength. Experience advocating for responsible use of location data, including privacy and access considerations, is regarded as beneficial.
