What you'll do
- Develop detailed engineering design plans using AutoCAD or similar CAD platforms for traffic signals, roundabouts, pavement markings, signing, and temporary traffic control layouts.
- Conduct traffic operation studies, pedestrian circulation analyses, and intersection improvement evaluations for municipal and private clients.
- Perform safety and operational performance assessments of existing transportation networks to identify deficiencies and recommend countermeasures.
- Analyze traffic volume, speed, and pattern data using Excel and specialized software to optimize signal timing plans and manage congestion.
- Assist in the design and evaluation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) elements, including Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and fiber optic communication infrastructure.
- Prepare geometric layouts and alignment designs for bike and pedestrian trail facilities to support multimodal transportation goals.
- Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to produce reports, exhibits, and construction documents for street lighting and pavement marking projects.
- Participate in citywide safety studies and corridor analyses, applying Highway Capacity Manual methodologies and other industry standards.
- Support the preparation of permit applications and coordination packages required by local and state transportation agencies.
- Engage in quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure deliverables meet Olsson standards and client specifications.
- Attend project meetings and public involvement sessions to present technical findings and gather stakeholder feedback.
- Pursue continuous professional development through mentorship programs and internal training sessions focused on traffic engineering fundamentals.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
- Zero to four years of relevant engineering experience in a consulting or public agency environment.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an Engineer Intern (EI) certification.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable computer-aided design software for civil engineering drafting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills necessary for technical report writing and team collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary project team.
- Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship (implied by standard EI certification pathway).
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with Synchro traffic simulation and signal timing optimization software.
- Familiarity with Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic design for transportation communication networks.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities, including complex formula creation, pivot tables, and data visualization for traffic analytics.
- Exposure to Highway Safety Manual (HSM) predictive methods or crash data analysis tools.
