What you'll do
- Take the lead on comprehensive structural design efforts for substation facilities, with a primary focus on deep foundations, equipment support structures, and complex steel framing.
- Manage the full lifecycle of engineering projects, transitioning seamlessly from early-stage conceptual planning through to final detailed design, permitting, and construction support.
- Partner closely with electrical engineering teams and CAD designers to ensure that structural designs are perfectly integrated with electrical equipment layouts and site constraints.
- Serve as a technical mentor and lead for junior staff, providing guidance on design methodologies, quality control, and professional development within the structural discipline.
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients and external contractors, facilitating clear communication and resolving technical queries throughout the project duration.
- Conduct thorough reviews of structural calculations and construction documents to ensure compliance with internal quality standards and project specifications.
- Provide on-site construction administration and support, ensuring that field installations align with the approved engineering designs and addressing any unforeseen site conditions.
- Stay current with evolving industry trends and technological advancements in substation design to maintain Olsson's competitive edge in the power sector.
- Manage project budgets and schedules for structural deliverables, ensuring that milestones are met on time and within the defined scope of work.
- Participate in business development activities by assisting with proposals and maintaining strong, long-term relationships with our utility and industrial clients.
Requirements
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering, with a specialized focus on structural mechanics and design.
- A minimum of 6 years of professional experience specifically within the structural engineering field, demonstrating a strong background in substation or heavy industrial infrastructure.
- Demonstrated expertise in the design and analysis of reinforced concrete foundations and structural steel systems tailored for high-voltage environments.
- Comprehensive knowledge of industry-standard building codes and engineering specifications, including ACI, AISC, IBC, and ASCE guidelines.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical information to both non-technical stakeholders and engineering peers.
- Strong organizational capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple project priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred; candidates without a PE must demonstrate the ability to obtain licensure within a defined timeframe.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in formal project management, including budget tracking, resource allocation, and client-facing project coordination.
- Hands-on experience with construction administration processes, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and site inspections.
- Familiarity with utility-specific design standards and regional power grid requirements.
