About the role

Join Olsson's South Facilities Engineering and Design team as a Lead Fire Protection Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of fire protection systems for mission-critical facilities, including hyperscale data centers and secure government or industrial facilities. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, code-compliant fire safety solutions that meet client specifications. This position offers an opportunity to lead complex projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the safety and resilience of vital infrastructure. The role requires a strong technical background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a collaborative environment.

What you'll do

• Lead the design, review, and approval of fire protection systems for secure and mission-critical facilities, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards such as NFPA, IBC, IFC, UFCs, and client-specific requirements.
• Develop detailed fire suppression, alarm, and life safety system designs tailored to high-security environments, including data centers, government facilities, and other specialized structures.
• Act as the primary technical authority and client liaison for fire protection aspects of projects, providing expert guidance and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, structural, security, and other engineering disciplines to develop integrated building system designs that incorporate fire safety measures seamlessly.
• Mentor and supervise junior engineers and technical staff, fostering professional development and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
• Assist in preparing project proposals, scope definitions, and budgets, contributing to the development of project timelines and resource planning.
• Conduct site visits and inspections as needed to verify design implementation and compliance during construction phases.
• Participate in internal project reviews, design charrettes, and quality assurance processes to maintain high standards of engineering excellence.
• Travel to project sites or other Olsson offices as required, with an estimated travel frequency of approximately 10% or less.
• Stay current with evolving fire safety codes, standards, and best practices, and incorporate these into project designs and recommendations.
• Support business development efforts by engaging with potential clients and contributing to proposal writing and presentations.

Requirements

• Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to clients, team members, and regulatory agencies.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required; a Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) license is preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in fire protection engineering, with a focus on designing systems for high-security or mission-critical facilities.
• At least 4 years of experience supervising or mentoring technical staff, providing guidance and quality assurance.
• Familiarity with the design and operation of fire suppression systems, alarm systems, and life safety measures for hyperscale data centers, government facilities, or other secure environments.
• Extensive knowledge of NFPA standards, IBC, IFC, UFCs, and other relevant codes and standards.
• Experience with design and modeling software such as REVIT, AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, or similar tools.
• Ability to interpret and apply complex building codes and standards to project designs.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, ensuring systems are both effective and compliant.
• Willingness to travel as needed for project site visits and client meetings.

Nice to have

• Experience with advanced fire modeling or simulation tools.
• Knowledge of security systems integration with fire protection systems.
• Familiarity with ITAR regulations or working on projects requiring compliance with such standards.
• Experience working on hyperscale data centers or government-secure facilities.
