About the role
Mosaicbc is seeking a dedicated Kurdish/Arabic Speaking Settlement Worker to join our team on a fixed-term basis until March 31, 2027. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about supporting newcomers in their settlement journey within the vibrant community of Burnaby, British Columbia. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in helping immigrants and refugees navigate their new environment, ensuring they have access to essential resources and services. This role requires cultural sensitivity, strong communication skills, and a commitment to empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds.

What you'll do
- Provide personalized support to Kurdish and Arabic-speaking newcomers, assisting them in understanding and accessing community resources, services, and programs.
- Conduct needs assessments to identify the specific challenges and barriers faced by clients, tailoring support plans accordingly.
- Facilitate workshops and information sessions on topics such as housing, employment, education, healthcare, and legal rights to empower clients with essential knowledge.
- Collaborate with local organizations, government agencies, and community groups to create a network of support for newcomers.
- Assist clients in completing necessary documentation for immigration, housing, and social services, ensuring they understand the processes involved.
- Offer one-on-one counseling sessions to help clients address personal challenges and develop coping strategies for their settlement journey.
- Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure they receive fair treatment and access to necessary services, including healthcare and education.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records, documenting progress and any referrals made to other services.
- Participate in community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about the needs of Kurdish and Arabic-speaking newcomers and promote available resources.
- Stay informed about changes in immigration policies and community services to provide up-to-date information to clients.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to settlement work and cultural competency.
- Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to client support.
Requirements
- Fluency in both Kurdish and Arabic, with excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- A minimum of two years of experience in social services, community development, or a related field, preferably working with immigrant and refugee populations.
- Strong understanding of the challenges faced by newcomers, including cultural, social, and economic barriers.
- Proven ability to build rapport and trust with clients from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating empathy and respect.
- Experience in conducting needs assessments and developing individualized support plans.
- Knowledge of local community resources, services, and programs available to newcomers in Burnaby and surrounding areas.
- Proficiency in using technology and software for documentation, communication, and data management.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle may be required for outreach activities.
Nice to have
- Experience working with specific cultural communities, particularly Kurdish and Arabic-speaking populations.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and practices.
- Previous experience in advocacy or policy work related to immigrant and refugee issues.
- Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the local community.
- Certification in settlement work or related fields would be an asset.
