What you'll do
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to the needs of diverse learners in various contexts, including classroom and online settings.
- Assess students' language proficiency levels through initial evaluations and ongoing assessments to track progress and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere that encourages participation and fosters a sense of community among students.
- Utilize a variety of teaching resources and technologies to enhance the learning experience and accommodate different learning styles.
- Provide constructive feedback to students on their language skills, offering guidance on areas for improvement and celebrating their successes.
- Collaborate with other instructors and staff to share best practices and contribute to the overall development of the ESL program.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with ESL teaching methodologies and trends.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and assessments to ensure compliance with program requirements.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and community partners to support learners' goals and address any concerns.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of students from various cultural backgrounds and with varying levels of English proficiency.
- Engage in community outreach initiatives to promote ESL programs and encourage enrollment among potential students.
- Attend staff meetings and contribute to program planning and evaluation efforts to enhance the quality of instruction provided.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, or a related field is preferred.
- A recognized ESL teaching certification (e.g., CELTA, TESOL, or equivalent) is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners.
- Strong understanding of language acquisition theories and effective teaching methodologies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Proven ability to create engaging lesson plans and adapt teaching materials to meet the needs of learners.
- Familiarity with online teaching platforms and digital resources for language instruction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in record-keeping and reporting.
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment.
Nice to have
- Experience working with immigrant and refugee populations is an asset.

Skills & tools
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace.
- Experience with online learning management systems (LMS) and virtual classroom tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet).
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to engage students effectively.
- Familiarity with assessment tools and techniques for measuring language proficiency.
Practical notes
- This position is on-call, which means that hours may vary based on program needs and student enrollment.
- Instructors may be required to work evenings or weekends, depending on class schedules.
- Candidates must have the ability to commute to various locations within Surrey and surrounding areas as needed.
