Product Counsel
Job description
About the role
The role operates as the dedicated legal partner for Moonpay's product teams, covering both DeFi product lines and regulated crypto asset services. This counsel translates complex regulatory frameworks into practical product guidance that enables fast yet compliant execution. The counsel partners with engineering, product, and compliance to align legal strategy with business outcomes.
Data roles turn raw information into decisions. Analysts query databases and build dashboards. Data scientists build models that predict outcomes. Data engineers build the pipelines that move and store data. All three work closely with business teams and need a mix of statistics, coding, and communication. Nearly every modern company runs on data teams, from startups to banks. A strong portfolio of past analyses matters more than degrees in many hiring decisions.
Key facts
Requirements
The posting states a bachelor's degree requirement. JD (or equivalent) and active bar membership in at least one jurisdiction.
6+ years of legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience at a crypto, DeFi, fintech, or regulated financial services company.
Deep, working understanding of DeFi: how DEXs and AMMs operate, what smart order routing involves, how non-custodial wallets and MPC key management work, and how smart contracts are used in protocol integrations.
Solid grounding in US regulatory frameworks most relevant to DeFi products: FinCEN money transmission and MSB analysis, SEC securities regulation, CFTC commodity derivatives regulation, and NYDFS requirements for licensed entities.
Experience providing product lifecycle legal advice directly to engineering and product teams.
Excellent communications skills to deliver crisp, practical legal advice and synthesise complex regulatory constructs succinctly, especially where the law is unsettled or its application to novel technology is unclear.
High comfort with legal ambiguity, risk-adjusted thinking, and fast-paced environments where the right answer is not always obvious.
Nice to have
Experience advising on MPC, threshold signature schemes, or other non-custodial key management architectures.
Familiarity with AI agent architectures and the legal frameworks emerging around autonomous financial transactions.
Experience with on-chain protocol governance, smart contract audit processes, or open-source software licensing in a crypto context.
Familiarity with crypto asset custody regulation and card program legal frameworks.
Exposure to prediction markets, on-chain derivatives, or structured DeFi products such as Polymarket, Hyperliquid, GMX, or comparable protocols.
Experience supporting the launch of novel regulated financial services, including licensing strategy, product scoping for regulatory compliance, and ongoing licence condition management.
Prior experience drafting or advising on protocol integration agreements, liquidity provider arrangements, or similar DeFi commercial documentation.
Practical notes
This role is based in New York with a hybrid work model.
Typical interview steps
Data interviews commonly include a SQL or coding exercise, a statistics question, and a case study. Candidates may be asked to design a metric, interpret an experiment, or build a small model. Some companies give a take-home analysis. Expect questions about past projects and the business impact of your work. Interviewers often evaluate how you communicate uncertainty and business impact, not only the math. Bringing a clean write-up of a past analysis to the interview is well received.
Good to know
Product counsel roles blend legal expertise with close collaboration across product, engineering, and compliance.
In crypto and DeFi, frameworks are still evolving, so the role requires comfort with ambiguity and rapid iteration.
The position works with regulated financial services and emerging decentralized protocols at scale.
Strong written and verbal communication is essential to translate regulatory concepts for cross-functional teams.
AI tools are embedded into daily workflows to support efficiency and decision-making.
