About the role
You will own the full lifecycle of user research platform features, translating ambiguous product problems into robust technical solutions that directly support how companies build the right products faster. You will architect and implement capabilities around qualitative analysis, audience management, and interview orchestration, ensuring that these systems scale reliably as research demand grows across global enterprises. You will act as a technical owner, making key architectural choices that balance speed with long-term maintainability and performance. You will collaborate daily with product managers, designers, and other engineers to refine requirements and validate outcomes against real user workflows. You will elevate the technical bar by establishing best practices, writing high quality code, and sharing knowledge so that the entire product engineering team can move faster with confidence. You will use data and user feedback to iterate on shipped features, optimizing for insight depth and usability in the Maze platform. Ultimately, you will play a central role in ensuring that Maze remains the user research platform of choice by building tools that make research accessible, intuitive, and fast.

What you'll do
- Architect and deliver high impact features that enable researchers to analyze and extract compelling insights from qualitative data using both classical methods and large language models.
- Design and expand audience management systems that help researchers connect with and reward participants from across the world, improving recruitment and retention.
- Integrate video and scheduling tools to provide a streamlined experience for managing and booking user interviews, reducing friction for research teams.
- Partner closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to design, build, and ship new features that align with product strategy and user needs.
- Establish best practices, frameworks, and repeatable processes that enable the team to measure the impact of every feature shipped to the Maze platform.
- Evaluate and improve the performance, maintainability, and security of applications in production, ensuring reliability for enterprise customers.
- Work in a collaborative and open team environment that places high value on feedback, continuous learning, and trust to drive innovation.
- Contribute to the broader engineering culture by mentoring peers, sharing knowledge, and promoting standards that raise technical quality across the organization.
- Implement solutions that balance rapid delivery with technical excellence, supporting Maze's mission to make research accessible, intuitive, and fast.
- Explore and prototype new capabilities that leverage AI to automate busywork and add depth and direction to user insights.
Requirements
- You are proficient with modern full-stack JavaScript using Node.js and React, with solid experience working with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
- You are enthusiastic about writing well-tested code and continuously improving your development environment to increase reliability and velocity.
- You have excellent written and spoken English skills, enabling clear communication with teammates and stakeholders across regions.
- You thrive in a remote-first work environment, demonstrating strong self-direction and discipline while collaborating effectively across distributed teams.
- You have a strong understanding of software architecture and can contribute to architectural decisions that impact scalability and maintainability.
- You are comfortable working with production systems and understand the fundamentals of monitoring, debugging, and incident response.
- You are passionate about building products that help researchers make better decisions and deeply understand user needs.
- You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and taking ownership of complex problems without needing constant direction.
Nice to have
- You have experience with Next.js, NestJS, GraphQL, and/or TypeScript, which can help you be productive faster within the Maze codebase.
- You have experience with AWS and/or Kubernetes, enabling you to contribute to cloud-native infrastructure and deployment workflows.
- You are interested in UX, UI design, and the research field, which helps you build more empathetic and effective product engineering solutions.
Practical notes
This is a full time role based in the United Kingdom. The position is remote-friendly, with preference for candidates located in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, or Portugal, as key engineering and product teams are based in these locales. Compensation is informed by data and aligned with market rates for venture backed companies, and details regarding salary range will be discussed during the hiring process with your recruiter.
