What you'll do
- Develop detailed cost estimates for a variety of projects, including civil engineering, construction, and infrastructure works, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Analyze project specifications, drawings, and other documentation to prepare comprehensive estimates that reflect the scope of work.
- Collaborate with project managers and engineers to understand project requirements and constraints, facilitating effective communication throughout the estimating process.
- Conduct market research to gather data on material costs, labor rates, and other relevant factors that impact project pricing.
- Prepare and present cost estimates to management and clients, providing clear explanations of the methodologies used and assumptions made.
- Monitor and track project costs during the execution phase, identifying any discrepancies between estimated and actual costs and proposing corrective actions as needed.
- Assist in the preparation of tender submissions, ensuring that all required documentation is complete and submitted on time.
- Participate in post-project evaluations to assess the accuracy of estimates and identify areas for improvement in future estimating practices.
- Maintain organized records of estimates, supporting documentation, and correspondence related to each project for future reference.
- Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes that may impact estimating processes and project costs.
- Foster strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and reliable service for project materials and services.
- Provide training and mentorship to junior estimators and other team members, sharing knowledge and expertise to enhance the overall estimating capabilities of the team.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Estimator in the construction or civil engineering sectors, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and processes, along with the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in estimating software and tools, with experience using industry-standard programs to create and manage estimates.
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex information and make informed decisions based on data.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey information to team members, clients, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and quality in all aspects of work.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain clear and comprehensive records of estimates and project documentation.
Nice to have
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience with specific estimating software such as CostX, Sage Estimating, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with relevant health and safety regulations and practices within the construction industry.
- Knowledge of sustainable building practices and materials, contributing to environmentally responsible project estimating.
