Product Manager, Product Platform
Job description
About the role
You own the platform that powers how Kin gets its products built, configured, and managed, including the Product API, product expansion and revision, and the AI-enablement layer that connects internal teams to it. You will define the product strategy and roadmap for this platform while acting as the primary steward of product configuration data and its evolution. You will translate complex workflows from State Management, Underwriting, Insurance, and Compliance into clear platform capabilities that remove friction for consumers of the platform. You will ensure the Product API delivers reliable, well-documented interfaces that scale as Kin's offerings grow beyond insurance. Success in this role will be measured by how independently and confidently internal teams can deliver and maintain products with minimal dependency on you. You will partner closely with engineering and design to move platform capabilities from prototype to production while establishing the metrics that prove platform health. You will also build and scale the AI-enablement layer on the Product API MCP to accelerate prototyping and self-service for consuming teams.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and own the end-to-end product strategy and roadmap for the Product API, the product configuration data model, and product expansion and revision tooling.
Treat internal teams such as State Management, Underwriting, Insurance, and Compliance as customers, translating their workflows and needs into platform capabilities that reduce manual effort and ambiguity.
Drive the Product API strategy and versioning standards so that internal and future external consumers receive reliable, well-documented interfaces that can be consumed with confidence.
Lead discovery initiatives to understand how the platform should evolve as Kin's offerings expand beyond insurance, grounding every decision in how consuming teams actually work today.
Build and scale the AI-enablement layer on the Product API MCP, using AI for rapid prototyping and other enablement work that lets consuming teams self-serve new capabilities.
Partner with engineering and design to take platform capabilities from prototype through production rollout, ensuring technical feasibility, scalability, and clarity of implementation.
Write precise specs and requirements that allow engineering to build IHOP and PAPI features with confidence and minimal back-and-forth.
Define and own the metrics that measure how independently consuming teams can deliver and maintain products, and use these metrics to shape the platform roadmap.
Establish clear documentation and standards for product data models and API contracts to ensure consistency across insurance products and future offerings.
Champion platform thinking across the organization, helping teams understand the long-term value of investing in and contributing to the common product platform.
Collaborate with data, compliance, and underwriting partners to ensure product configurations meet regulatory requirements while maximizing flexibility and speed.
Identify opportunities to standardize patterns and abstractions across products, reducing duplication and enabling faster experimentation by internal teams.
Support the adoption of the Product API MCP by creating onboarding materials, examples, and tooling that make it easy for teams to integrate and self-serve.
Continuously evaluate the health of the platform through metrics and feedback, prioritizing improvements that increase consumer independence and reduce time to market.
Work closely with leadership to align platform investments with Kin's strategic priorities around growth, unit economics, sustainability, and customer outcomes.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in product management, with direct ownership of a platform, API, or internal tooling product.
Experience treating internal teams as customers, with the ability to translate their workflows into platform capabilities and clear contracts.
Strong understanding of product data models, APIs, and versioning strategies, with a track record of maintaining them over time.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where priorities can shift and problems require creative, practical solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clear specs and requirements that engineers can act on with minimal clarification.
Experience collaborating with engineering, design, data, and compliance to deliver platform capabilities that meet both business and regulatory needs.
A bias for action and ownership, with the discipline to define success metrics, measure outcomes, and iterate based on evidence.
Nice to have
Experience working in insurance or highly regulated environments where compliance and data integrity are critical.
Familiarity with AI-enabled tooling and prompt engineering concepts to help design effective MCP layers and workflows.
Background building or consuming internal platforms, APIs, or configuration systems.
Experience with versioning strategies for data models and APIs in large, distributed product organizations.
