About the role
This role is for a leader who will guide a team responsible for the core infrastructure that enables Instacart's enterprise retail partnerships. You will shape the technical direction for how Instacart scales its platform for major grocers globally.

What you'll do
- Guide, mentor, and develop a team of approximately 12 engineers, setting clear technical and execution strategies.
- Define and uphold the team's core technical principles, focusing on multi-tenancy, data separation, and flexible retailer customization.
- Drive the integration of various retailer-specific services onto a unified Instacart platform.
- Collaborate with Machine Learning and Data Engineering teams to ensure data compliance for enterprise ML systems.
- Develop self-service tools for retailers and internal teams to streamline deployments.
- Act as a technical liaison, managing trade-offs and aligning roadmaps across multiple engineering and product groups.
Requirements
- A minimum of 8 years in software engineering, with at least 3 years managing teams that build platform or infrastructure products for businesses.
- Experience leading teams of 10 or more engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, and career growth for senior staff.
- A proven ability to navigate and drive progress in complex, fast-growing environments with evolving partner needs.
- Demonstrated cross-functional leadership, influencing outcomes across various engineering and product departments.
- Experience managing significant architectural shifts, such as consolidation or data isolation, within established companies.
- Technical understanding of distributed systems, API and SDK design, and cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Prior experience with commerce platforms, omnichannel retail, order management systems, point-of-sale systems, catering software, or in-store technologies.
- A history of building multi-tenant platforms with per-tenant configuration and data isolation.
- Experience working with ML and Data Engineering on data platforms or model training infrastructure.
- Background in scaling enterprise integrations and managing technical relationships with partners.
- Experience managing other engineering managers and overseeing a two-tier management structure.

- Base pay ranges are as follows, depending on your permanent work
- CA, NY, CT, NJ: $265,000 - $279,500 USD
- WA: $254,000 - $268,000 USD
- OR, DE, ME, MA, MD, NH, RI, VT, DC, PA, VA, CO, TX, IL, HI: $243,000 - $256,500 USD
- All other states: $221,000 - $233,000 USD
- Compensation is competitive and includes a new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
