About the role
You will work closely with finance, accounting, billing, and revenue teams to understand their main pain points and translate them into self-serve, reliable, and scalable data solutions. You are expected to mentor other team members and be a champion of engineering excellence across the organization. You will be part of a small team with a large amount of ownership and autonomy, managing initiatives directly from design through execution. You will have the freedom to suggest and drive organization-wide initiatives that shape the financial data vision and roadmap. You will own critical data integration pipelines and models, ensuring uniform, reliable, timely, and accurate financial reporting. You will help define how financial data is modeled and standardized for uniform, reliable, timely and accurate reporting across all of Instacart's products. You will play a key role in driving the Finance Data Strategy and building the platform that Instacart's financial data infrastructure will be built upon.

What you'll do
Identify and resolve complex data pipeline issues impacting financial reporting and ensure system reliability under high scale. Design and implement data models that standardize financial datasets for cross functional visibility and decision making. Partner with accounting and billing teams to define data requirements and support monthly close processes through robust ETL/ELT solutions. Optimize query performance and data accessibility in cloud data warehouses to support timely retail invoicing and internal reporting. Collaborate with cross functional stakeholders to translate business needs into technical specifications and project plans. Lead the execution of data initiatives from discovery through deployment while maintaining high standards for data quality. Implement solutions using modern data infrastructure technologies to support auditability and immutability requirements. Mentor engineers and analysts to elevate the overall capability and ownership within the data organization. Define and drive organization-wide data integration standards that align with the broader financial data strategy.
Requirements
8+ years of working experience in a Data/Software Engineering role, with a focus on building data pipelines (specialized in financial data). Strong knowledge of cloud based warehouses like Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery. Strong knowledge of common data infra technologies (Python, Airflow, Spark, Iceberg, Delta Lake) in a production environment. Expert in data modeling with experience in modeling complex financial data with scalability and usability in mind. Expert with SQL and dbt (Data Build Tool). Experience building high quality and complex ETL/ELT pipelines including pipelines for accounting/billing purposes. Experience with data immutability, auditability, slowly changing dimensions, and data quality enforcement mechanisms. Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with non technical stakeholders and document technical decisions.

This position is based in Canada with remote eligibility for residents of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. You will engage with critical financial data systems that support monthly and quarterly book close cycles, retailer invoicing, and internal and external financial reporting. Success in this role requires a high level of ownership, autonomy, and the ability to influence data strategy across engineering and finance organizations. You will be responsible for ensuring that financial data pipelines deliver accurate and reliable inputs for decision making and compliance requirements. The position provides an opportunity to shape foundational data infrastructure that impacts how Instacart manages revenue, billing, and reporting at scale. Effective collaboration with finance, accounting, and billing teams is essential to align data definitions and reporting standards across the business. This role is suited for an experienced data engineer who thrives in ambiguous environments and can drive execution without direct oversight. You will contribute to building long term data platform capabilities that support both operational and strategic financial initiatives. The scope of this role includes ownership of end to end data integration workflows that touch multiple systems across the organization. You will be expected to balance delivery of urgent requests with longer term platform improvements. Mentorship and knowledge sharing will be part of your regular responsibilities as you help grow the capabilities of the data team. This role reports into the Data Infrastructure team and works closely with cross functional partners to ensure alignment between data products and business objectives. Your work will directly support Instacart's mission to transform the grocery industry by providing reliable data infrastructure that enables better decision making and operational efficiency.
