About the role
Flutterwavego is looking for a Staff Fullstack Engineer to join the Core team and help build foundational products that power the company's platform. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining the central systems that underpin the organization's technical infrastructure and daily operations. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions that support the company's growth and evolving operational needs. This position plays a critical part in ensuring the platform remains stable and performant as usage increases across markets. The Core team is responsible for the foundational services that all other products depend on, making this role central to the company's technical success.

What you'll do
Design and implement scalable backend services that form the backbone of the platform's core functionality and data flow.
Build and maintain responsive frontend interfaces that provide a smooth and intuitive experience for both internal and external users.
Write clean, well-tested code across the full application stack to ensure long-term system reliability and maintainability.
Collaborate with product and design teams to translate complex business requirements into clear and actionable technical specifications.
Conduct thorough code reviews and mentor junior engineers to raise the overall quality and consistency of the engineering organization.
Participate in architectural decisions that shape the direction and evolution of the core platform over time.
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues promptly, diagnosing root causes and implementing long-term fixes that prevent recurrence.
Contribute to the definition of engineering standards, patterns, and best practices that guide the team's day-to-day work.
Optimize existing systems for performance, security, and maintainability as the user base and transaction volume continues to grow.
Document technical designs, APIs, and system architecture thoroughly to support knowledge sharing, onboarding, and future development efforts.
Requirements
Proven experience as a fullstack engineer with a strong focus on backend systems, distributed architecture, and high-throughput applications.
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language commonly used for server-side application development in production environments.
Experience building and consuming RESTful or GraphQL APIs in production environments with a focus on reliability and performance.
Solid understanding of database design principles, including both relational databases and NoSQL data stores for scalable applications.
Solid familiarity with containerization technologies, orchestration tools, and deployment workflows in modern cloud-based production environments.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex technical challenges with minimal supervision.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating effectively with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
Experience working at a payments or fintech company with high reliability and uptime requirements in a fast-paced setting.
Familiarity with event-driven architectures and message queue systems for handling asynchronous processing workloads efficiently.
Previous leadership experience guiding technical projects or initiatives within a growing engineering organization.
Knowledge of observability tools, structured logging practices, and monitoring strategies for distributed and microservice-based architectures.
Skills & tools
Proficiency in languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or Go for fullstack development and service creation.
Experience with modern frameworks and libraries for building web applications, services, and internal tooling.
Working knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git-based workflows, branching strategies, and code review practices.
Comfort with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure for hosting, scaling, and managing infrastructure.
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and quality assurance practices for continuous delivery workflows.
Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools, configuration management, and container orchestration for reproducible and consistent environments.
Practical notes
This role is based in Lekki, Lagos, and requires regular on-site presence at the company's office during business hours.
The position is full-time with standard business hours, though some flexibility may be available for core collaboration and meeting times.
Candidates should be prepared to engage in on-call rotations to support production systems during critical periods and incidents.
The hiring process includes multiple technical interviews, a take-home or live coding assessment, and a final team presentation.
