About the role
You will own the complete electrical design and delivery of edge-AI hardware that powers the next generation of video security. This role centers on turning reference SoC designs from Ambarella and NXP into robust, production-ready devices that operate reliably in the field. You will guide every board from initial schematic capture through layout, bring-up, validation, and mass production. Your work will define how our cameras, intercoms, and access controllers acquire, process, and stream intelligence at the edge. You will collaborate closely with software, product, and operations teams to align hardware decisions with customer needs and manufacturing realities. This position demands a scrappy, ownership mindset where your decisions directly shape the reliability and scalability of our global deployments. You will be responsible for ensuring that theoretical designs translate into real-world hardware that meets stringent power, cost, and performance targets.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own board design end to end, including architecture, component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, and rigorous design reviews for edge-inferencing cameras, intercoms, door readers, and access control hardware.
- Evaluate embedded chipsets, adapt vendor reference designs and EVKs, and iterate them into production designs that satisfy strict cost, power, and form-factor constraints.
- Own board bring-up and validation activities, encompassing power sequencing, signal integrity analysis, sensor and peripheral integration, functional test development, and EMC/pre-compliance testing.
- Own the embedded platform for your boards, maintaining the BSP, bootloader, device trees, drivers, and base image so that hardware boots reliably, streams efficiently, and updates securely in the field.
- Design for demanding real-world environments, managing PoE power budgets, surge and ESD protection, audio paths for intercoms, reader and controller interfaces such as OSDP, Wiegand, and RS-485, and thermal behavior within sealed enclosures.
- Own the complete product lifecycle, guiding prototypes through EVT, DVT, and PVT stages, coordinating vendor handoff, and supporting safe and efficient field deployment.
- Manage vendor and supplier relationships to ensure on-time, high-quality component delivery and smooth transitions to manufacturing partners.
- Act as a proactive self-starter, taking initiative, acting with urgency, and applying a scrappy, hands-on problem-solving approach in fast-moving and ambiguous situations.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
- Bring 5+ years of hands-on experience in hardware product development, with at least one product successfully shipped at volume.
- Demonstrate strong schematic capture and PCB layout skills, using tools such as Altium or equivalent, and show mastery of high-speed digital design topics including DDR/LPDDR, MIPI CSI-2, USB, Ethernet, and PoE.
- Exhibit hands-on lab and bring-up competence, comfort with measurement tools like scopes and logic analyzers, and the ability to debug hardware that fails to boot.
- Show working embedded software competence in C, embedded Linux distributions such as Yocto or Buildroot, U-Boot, device trees, and enough driver fluency to troubleshoot issues across the hardware/software boundary.
- Possess proven Design for Manufacturing experience and a track record of working effectively with contract manufacturers through the New Product Introduction process.
- Display resilience and adaptability in challenging, fast-paced, and ambiguous project environments.
- Communicate exceptionally well in written and spoken English, with the ability to influence stakeholders and partners at all organizational levels.
- Be prepared to work onsite in our Sunnyvale location, recognizing that close collaboration and face-to-face interaction accelerate our development cycle.
Nice to have
- Direct experience shipping products on Ambarella CVx or NXP i.MX platforms, understanding their strengths and limitations in video and AI workloads.
- Camera and imaging experience, including sensor selection and integration, ISP tuning, IR illumination strategies, and tradeoffs involving lens choices and module integration.
- Access control or intercom domain expertise, covering credential readers such as NFC and BLE, secure element integration, microphone and speaker design, and echo cancellation techniques.
- Regulatory and compliance experience, with knowledge of FCC, CE, and standards for IP and IK-rated enclosure design.
- Chinese language proficiency and prior experience leading vendor engagement or managing manufacturing partnerships with partners in Taiwan and China.
- Strong hands-on prototyping instincts, with the ability to rapidly translate abstract ideas into physical proofs of concept and iterate based on real-world feedback.
- The initiative to take projects from half-baked ideas to working hardware without waiting for detailed direction or extensive approval cycles.
