Superintendent - Governmental

About the role

You will operate as the key on-site leader for governmental projects assigned to the Montgomery, Alabama area, owning the daily execution and performance of the work. You will work in a collaborative environment where your decisions directly influence the safety, quality, and schedule of the project. This role requires a proactive partner who manages the relationship between the field workforce, office leadership, and the public owner. You will be responsible for translating project plans into actionable field operations while maintaining strict compliance with contract documents. Success in this position is defined by your ability to deliver the project on time, within budget, and without incident. You will manage the craft workforce and subcontractors to ensure productivity aligns with the project objectives. This position demands a high level of integrity and professionalism when representing Caddell Construction on public infrastructure projects.

What you'll do

Coordinate the daily field operations and delegate responsibilities to foremen and subcontractor representatives to ensure efficient workflow.

Manage the craft workforce and subcontractors in the field, directing activities through foremen to maintain productivity standards.

Communicate regularly with engineering, quality control, and safety departments to verify that all work adheres to drawings, specifications, and the established schedule.

Review project plans, specifications, job budgets, and estimates in collaboration with the Project Manager and Project Superintendent to clarify quantities, values, and manpower needs.

Participate actively in schedule development and logic reviews, creating short-term look-ahead schedules and overseeing their execution during weekly subcontractor meetings.

Assist in establishing procedures for receiving, storing, and handling materials at the project site at the beginning of each job.

Troubleshoot construction issues such as low productivity or work interface conflicts to keep the project moving forward.

Cultivate a cooperative relationship with the project owner to foster mutual respect and a spirit of partnership between Caddell and all project stakeholders.

Perform additional assignments as directed by the Project Manager or Superintendent to support project needs.

Maintain strict compliance with all project requirements, ensuring that all construction activities meet the standards set by the owner and regulatory bodies.

Serve as the primary liaison between the field team and corporate office, providing accurate updates and status reports.

Ensure that all personnel understand and follow safety regulations to maintain a zero-incident workplace environment.

Oversee the quality of workmanship to ensure that final deliverables meet or exceed contractual expectations.

Adapt to changing project conditions and adjust strategies as necessary to protect the project timeline and budget.

Requirements

Minimum high school diploma/GED, and four years' experience in the construction industry as foreman or assistant superintendent required.

Four-year degree in engineering or construction management and four years' experience preferred.

Must hold a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record.

Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment authorization.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must be willing to work full-time hours as required by the project schedule.

Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including hot, cold, humid, and wet environments.

Must be able to crawl, climb, walk, reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, crouch, stand for long periods of time, lift and hold in excess of 50lbs, talk, hear and occasionally sit.

Must have the ability to withstand confined spaces and or/extreme heights while negotiating tasks at hand in a safe manner to themselves and/or others.

Must understand and adhere to all company safety policies and government safety regulations.

Must possess strong problem-solving skills to address unexpected challenges on the job site.

Must demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Must have reliable transportation to the job site in Montgomery, Alabama.

Nice to have

Four-year degree in engineering or construction management.

Previous experience working on governmental or public infrastructure projects.

Experience with heavy civil or infrastructure construction methods.

Knowledge of project management software and scheduling software.

Understanding of contract administration and change order processes.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position that requires significant travel within the Montgomery, Alabama area and potentially extended hours to meet project deadlines. Travel may be required between multiple project sites. The role is subject to prevailing drug testing and background check policies.
