Product Actuary, Life & Annuity
Job description
About the role
You will serve as the definitive actuarial and calculation subject-matter expert for a team constructing core illustration and policy administration capabilities from the ground up. This role demands ownership of translating intricate actuarial mathematics into precise, executable system logic that directly powers insurance product functionality. You will operate at the intersection of technical implementation and regulatory actuarial standards, ensuring system outputs faithfully represent complex product designs. The position requires a hands-on mentality where your analysis directly influences production-grade software used by major life insurers. You will leverage emerging technologies, including AI tools, to accelerate prototyping and validation of calculation workflows. Collaboration is central, as you work daily with engineering, product, and compliance partners to align technical builds with business intent. Your work will have a direct impact on modernizing a centuries-old industry by enabling faster, more reliable product delivery.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Serve as the primary authority on actuarial and calculation logic for life insurance illustrations and policy administration systems, guiding a team building these foundational capabilities.
- Convert detailed life insurance and annuity product specifications into accurate system logic, addressing complex mechanisms such as crediting rules, rider charges, benefit bases, surrender schedules, and other product-specific features.
- Utilize artificial intelligence tools to rapidly create prototypes, generate code, and execute tests for calculation logic, accelerating development cycles and reducing errors.
- Lead the analysis and validation of policy migration projects, ensuring that legacy in-force blocks, including those sold many years ago, are accurately represented on the new platform without deviation from original contract terms.
- Conduct rigorous validation of system outputs against actuarial specifications, identifying and resolving discrepancies between intended product design and implemented behavior.
- Act as a key resource for User Acceptance Testing, methodically reviewing system results and confirming alignment with expected outcomes for new products and platform enhancements.
- Author comprehensive documentation that captures product calculation methodologies, business rules, and implementation decisions for both current reference and future audits.
- Collaborate with carrier and vendor implementation teams to facilitate the onboarding of new insurance products and features, ensuring technical integration meets actuarial and operational standards.
- Apply creative problem-solving to navigate ambiguous requirements and edge cases in life insurance product mathematics, ensuring robust and reliable solutions.
- Contribute to the evolution of best practices around AI-assisted development within the actuarial domain, sharing insights to improve team efficiency and output quality.
Requirements
- Possess a minimum of 8 years of cumulative experience within the life insurance industry, demonstrating a deep understanding of product lifecycles and regulatory environments.
- Bring 3 to 5 years of direct, hands-on experience in constructing pricing models or implementing illustration and policy administration systems, with proven work on real-world carrier or vendor platforms.
- Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of life and annuity insurance products, including IUL, VUL, FIA, and complex riders, along with their associated calculations and transaction flows.
- Demonstrate a history of successfully connecting theoretical actuarial calculations to their practical execution in policy administration workflows, understanding the downstream implications of every formula.
- Show familiarity with modern coding practices and tools, particularly those that accelerate development, with experience in agentic coding workflows being a distinct advantage.
- Have substantial experience managing policy migrations or legacy block conversions, including reconciling historical data, validating legacy calculation logic, and ensuring source-to-target integrity.
- Hold an active Actuarial credential such as ASA or FSA, with strong preference given to candidates who can demonstrate the equivalent technical depth and expertise in the absence of formal certification.
- Communicate effectively in writing, producing clear, concise, and technically accurate documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Be authorized to work in the United States and currently residing in a location where remote employment is permissible under Bestow's policies.
Nice to have
- Prior experience working directly with life insurance carriers on new product launches or platform transformations.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as NAIC and state-specific life insurance regulations.
- Background in developing or implementing experiences for policyholder or agent-facing portals.
