Mechanical Design Engineer (Tooling Design Focus)
Job description
About the role
We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who specializes in tooling design and is dedicated to creating manufacturing solutions that facilitate high-volume production. In this position, you will work closely with various teams, including Engineering, Platform Design, and Contract Manufacturing partners, to design and produce tooling, test fixtures, and jigs that enhance scalable manufacturing processes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead the complete design, development, and validation of custom tooling and fixtures for New Product Introduction (NPI) and high-volume electronics manufacturing.
- Manage the mechanical design process from initial concept through CAD modeling, documentation, vendor interactions, and support for pilot builds.
- Create and validate custom tooling, test fixtures, and jigs tailored for high-volume production.
- Convert mechanical and process specifications into CAD models, detailed drawings, and comprehensive documentation.
- Engage in design reviews and provide feedback on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT) for new products.
- Collaborate with Hardware Engineering, Platform Design, Reliability Engineering, and Contract Manufacturing partners.
- Identify and specify manufacturing methods (CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal, coatings) for tooling applications.
- Conduct tolerance stackup analysis for intricate mechanical assemblies.
- Collaborate with international Contract Manufacturers and vendors to facilitate tool release, prototyping, and pilot builds.
- Investigate and propose new manufacturing technologies to enhance tooling quality and cost efficiency.
- Develop and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and revision histories; experience with Agile PLM or Windchill PDMLink is advantageous.
Requirements
- A bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Mechanical NPI Engineer or Mechanical Design Engineer, with strong knowledge in DFM for both prototypes and production.
- 1 to 3 years of practical experience in scaling and implementing liquid cooling thermal solutions, covering applications from board level to facility level, including cold plates, fittings, tubing, hose terminations, leak detection technologies, and system-level cooling hardware such as CDUs and AALCs.
- Solid understanding of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and a strong grasp of ECO/MCO/DEV/PCN processes.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and debug electromechanical systems, conduct failure and root cause analysis, and utilize structured problem-solving techniques such as 8D.
