About the role

Join the Core Applications team to build the foundational platform that powers our flagship products. You will design and maintain the underlying services and data models that enable engineering teams to scale effectively. In this capacity, you will act as a foundational engineer shaping the long-term architecture of our systems. The role requires you to balance immediate delivery with the strategic goal of building reusable platform components. You will own the critical infrastructure that allows other teams to move quickly with confidence. What you'll do

• Architect and maintain core platform services supporting multiple product teams, ensuring that the foundational layers remain robust and extensible as usage grows.
• Build reliable, fault-tolerant backend systems for large-scale workloads, implementing patterns that prevent single points of failure and enable graceful degradation.
• Develop APIs and foundational frameworks to accelerate feature development, reducing the time required for other teams to bring new ideas to production.
• Optimize systems for high-throughput data ingestion, processing, and retrieval, analyzing bottlenecks and implementing solutions that improve latency and throughput.
• Improve platform performance, observability, and operational standards by introducing better monitoring, alerting, and diagnostic tooling that provides clear insight into system behavior.
• Collaborate with Product and Data teams to define platform strategy, translating business requirements into technical specifications that guide implementation.
• Mentor team members and conduct technical design and code reviews, fostering a culture of quality, clarity, and shared learning within the engineering organization.
• Troubleshoot production issues to ensure system resilience, leading incident response efforts and driving post-incident reviews to prevent recurrence.
• Design data models and storage strategies that balance the needs of transactional integrity with the demands of analytical querying at scale.
• Implement integration patterns that allow our platform to securely and efficiently interact with external services and internal microservices.
• Evaluate and adopt new technologies where appropriate, running experiments to validate their fit within our existing architecture and operational constraints.
• Own the full lifecycle of platform features, from initial design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement based on feedback.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering focused on backend applications and distributed systems, with a track record of delivering production-grade services.
• Expertise in designing and operating highly available backend services, including a deep understanding of redundancy, failover, and recovery strategies.
• Experience processing large datasets and managing millions of records, demonstrating comfort with data volumes that do not fit comfortably in memory.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language, with Python or Java preferred, allowing you to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code.
• Deep understanding of distributed system concepts including scalability, consistency, and fault tolerance, and the trade-offs involved in choosing specific patterns.
• Ability to design complex business workflows for multiple downstream consumers, ensuring that the platform supports diverse use cases without unnecessary duplication of logic.
• Strong analytical and debugging capabilities, enabling you to trace issues across service boundaries and identify root causes in complex environments.
• A commitment to writing tests and maintaining documentation that supports long-term maintainability and on-boarding of new engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale data pipelines and processing systems, including batch and stream processing paradigms.
• Familiarity with data aggregation, transformation, and analytics, allowing you to build features that turn raw data into actionable insights.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, streaming platforms, or workflow orchestration, helping you design systems that are responsive and decoupled.
• Background in building shared frameworks or platform capabilities used by multiple teams, indicating a history of driving adoption and enabling others.
