About the role
Verkada is on the lookout for an experienced legal professional to spearhead the development and management of global privacy and artificial intelligence governance initiatives. Reporting directly to the Chief Privacy Officer, you will collaborate closely with various business stakeholders to shape strategic direction and implement effective compliance frameworks. This position is designed for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and is adept at establishing essential policies for a rapidly expanding organization.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Serve as the primary expert on international privacy laws, artificial intelligence, and machine learning regulations, ensuring the company remains compliant with evolving legal standards.
- Design, implement, and oversee the company's privacy program, which encompasses the development of relevant policies and operational procedures.
- Establish and lead a governance framework for AI that aligns with the software development lifecycle, ensuring ethical and legal compliance throughout the process.
- Provide guidance to product and engineering teams on privacy considerations from the initial design phase through to product launch, ensuring that privacy is integrated into the development process.
- Draft, review, and maintain a variety of legal agreements, including Data Processing Agreements (DPAs), Business Associate Agreements (BAAs), and security terms to safeguard the company's interests.
- Collaborate with the commercial legal team to support transactions that involve sensitive areas such as biometrics, data sharing, and artificial intelligence technologies.
- Conduct compliance audits and manage the company's response to privacy-related incidents or inquiries from regulatory bodies, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Stay updated on global privacy trends and legislative changes, proactively advising the organization on necessary adjustments to policies and practices.
- Train and educate internal teams on privacy best practices, fostering a culture of compliance and awareness throughout the organization.
- Engage with external stakeholders, including regulators and industry groups, to advocate for the company's interests in privacy and AI matters.
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the privacy program, making recommendations for improvements as necessary.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
- A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in the field of privacy, with at least 4 years spent in an in-house legal role at a business-to-business (B2B) technology firm.
- Proven track record of advising global organizations that offer both hardware and software solutions, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between technology and privacy.
- Experience in guiding clients through complex global policy issues and engaging in regulatory advocacy efforts.
- Willingness and ability to commute to the San Mateo office five days a week.
- Must possess the legal right to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.

- Previous experience in a startup environment, particularly in the tech sector.
