About the role
Verkada is seeking a Senior BSP Engineer to contribute to the development of our integrated, AI-powered physical security platform. This role involves working on device software for a system that includes video security, access control, and environmental sensors. What you'll do
- Investigate and implement low-level device drivers for new sensor integrations within the Verkada ecosystem.
- Analyze and optimize system performance metrics to ensure real-time responsiveness across the security platform.
- Design and maintain robust communication protocols that facilitate secure data exchange between edge devices and the cloud.
- Conduct thorough validation testing of firmware updates to guarantee stability before wide-scale deployment.
- Mentor junior engineers on best practices for embedded systems design and Linux-based software development.
- Troubleshoot intricate hardware-software interface issues using advanced debugging tools and diagnostic techniques.
- Evaluate emerging development boards and assess their compatibility with Verkada's long-term product strategy.
- Architect scalable software modules that support the addition of new features via over-the-air update mechanisms.
- Document all software changes and architectural decisions to ensure clarity and continuity for the engineering team.
- Partner with the hardware team to define product requirements that align with manufacturing and software implementation constraints.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Possess five years of full-time experience in embedded software development focusing on real-time systems.
- Demonstrate proficiency in at least one system programming language such as C, C++, Golang, or Rust.
- Accumulate a minimum of two years of full-time system software development experience specifically for Linux-based platforms.
- Exhibit a strong understanding of modern operating systems principles and computer architecture fundamentals.
- Show familiarity with Bash scripts and Python for automation and system administration tasks.
- Prove effective communication skills to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Maintain strong documentation abilities to ensure code clarity and project knowledge retention.
- Must be able to work on-site five days per week at the San Mateo, California office.
Nice to have
- Experience developing on-device software for cloud-connected hardware in a production environment.
- Familiarity with Linux Kernel development and contributing to upstream kernel projects.
- Familiarity with Bootloader development and the various stages of the system boot process.
