About the Role
The Intermodal Equipment Manager serves as the primary subject matter expert on intermodal capacity dynamics and macro market trends within the Uber Freight network. This position is a critical strategic and operational leadership role designed to secure and optimize the flow of intermodal equipment across the organization's logistics ecosystem. The successful candidate will drive the strategy and processes that enable the team to collaborate effectively with internal operations, railroad partners, and third-party vendors. The goal is to meet customer capacity commitments, control financial risk, and maximize network efficiency. This role requires a collaborative leader with deep rail and intermodal expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and a proven track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
What You'll Do
- Drive Capacity Strategy: Develop and manage the strategy and processes for how the team collaborates with operating staff and vendors to secure intermodal container capacity.
- Escalation Management: Act as the main escalation point when engaging railroad partners to resolve situations where capacity demands are not met.
- Market Expertise: Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the intermodal capacity ecosystem within Uber Freight and the broader macro intermodal market.
- Team Support & Execution: Outline expectations and provide support to the team to understand and execute capacity commitments to customers. This includes equipment allocations, award management, street turn utilization, and leveraging internal systems and vendor resources.
- Team Development: Train, mentor, and manage the team to ensure strict adherence to all company policies.
- Performance Coaching: Coach the team on equipment, capacity, and network optimization best practices. Provide continuous feedback, positive recognition, and guidance for competency improvement.
- Relationship Building: Develop and nurture railroad relationships to enrich the partnership between the organizations.
- Financial Risk Management: Continuously monitor financial risk levels associated with vendor accessorials and expenses required to successfully manage network capacity.
- Performance Accountability: Hold the team accountable for Service Level Agreements (SLA) by monitoring performance via internal tools like Front.

- Data-Driven Insights: Leverage, analyze, and validate available trend reporting to derive insights around equipment capacity, gate reservation security, network optimization, and team behavior.
- Process Improvement: Develop and deploy solutions to increase profitability and/or employee efficiency through root cause analysis.
- Operational Support: Maintain street turn utilization and effectively leverage internal systems, resources, or vendor websites to secure equipment and gate reservations. Support award management processes related to intermodal equipment commitments.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Core Experience: Prior Intermodal Experience within capacity solutions, operations, or a related role is required.
- Technology Proficiency: Prior experience with Bloom or related technology/railroad websites is mandatory.
- Technical Skill: Demonstrated proficiency with MS Excel and/or Google Sheets is essential.
- Leadership: You must have the ability to train, mentor, and manage a team to ensure adherence to company policies.
- Relationship Development: You must be capable of developing railroad relationships to foster productive partnerships.
- Risk Management: You must be able to continuously monitor financial risk levels associated with network capacity management.
- Compliance: You must hold team members accountable for Service Level Agreements using monitoring tools.
- Strategic Planning: You must be able to amend and update customer equipment allocations based on market and regional demands during peak seasons.
Preferred Qualifications
- Leadership Background: Prior leadership or prior management experience leading a team is preferred.
- Collaboration: A strong ability to build relationships and work cross-functionally and collaboratively.
- Organization: Exceptional organizational skills with a proven ability to prioritize competing deadlines and streamline team workflows.
- Communication: Clear, adaptable verbal and written communication skills to effectively align stakeholders.
Compensation & Benefits
Employees working more than 30 hours in the US at Uber Freight are eligible for benefits.
