Senior Technical Director - Site Remediation

What you'll do

Define the strategic direction and technical vision for the site remediation practice in New York and New Jersey, aligning project execution with firm-wide goals and market opportunities.

Lead the planning and execution of complex site investigations, integrating conceptual site models, site characterization data, and risk assessment frameworks to guide remedial system design.

Develop and oversee remedial engineering strategies for contaminated sites, selecting appropriate technologies such as pump and treat, soil vapor extraction, chemical oxidation, or monitored natural attenuation.

Manage client relationships and project teams, coordinating with environmental scientists, engineers, regulators, and legal counsel to ensure alignment with regulatory expectations and project budgets.

Champion the application of innovative remediation technologies and data-driven approaches to improve performance, reduce life-cycle costs, and accelerate project closure.

Prepare high-quality technical reports, feasibility studies, and design documents that meet regulatory standards and effectively communicate findings to diverse audiences.

Mentor and guide junior and mid-level staff, fostering a collaborative environment that emphasizes technical excellence, continuous learning, and professional growth.

Collaborate with business development teams to craft compelling proposals and support responses to Requests for Proposals, leveraging technical expertise to position Matrix New World Engineering as a leader in the field.

Ensure that all project deliverables are completed on schedule and to the highest standards of quality, maintaining a robust document management and quality assurance process.

Promote a culture of safety, integrity, and environmental stewardship, ensuring that project activities adhere to best practices and uphold the firm's commitment to sustainable outcomes.

Identify and evaluate emerging regulatory trends and technological advancements, translating these insights into actionable strategies for clients and the broader practice.

Support the growth of the remediation practice by identifying new markets, service lines, and partnership opportunities that enhance our capabilities and market share.

Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across Matrix New World Engineering and its partner firms, integrating site remediation with urban planning, coastal engineering, and sustainable infrastructure initiatives.

Represent the firm in professional forums, industry conferences, and technical working groups, strengthening our brand and thought leadership in environmental remediation.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, or a closely related field, with a strong foundation in site investigation and remedial technologies.

You must have a minimum of 20 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental consulting, with at least 10 years focused on site remediation and contaminated site management.

Demonstrated expertise in hydrogeology, site characterization, and the design and implementation of remedial systems is essential for success in this role.

You must hold a professional engineering license in at least one U.S. state, with New York State Professional Engineer licensure strongly preferred.

Proven experience leading and managing multidisciplinary project teams, including scientists, engineers, and technical staff, on complex environmental projects is required.

You must have a strong track record of developing and maintaining client relationships, including experience working with industrial, infrastructure, redevelopment, and legal sector clients.

Experience navigating regulatory frameworks at the state and federal level, including interactions with agencies such as the EPA and New York State DEC, is mandatory.

A demonstrated commitment to quality assurance and quality control, with experience in developing and applying project-specific QA/QC plans, is required.

Nice to have

Preferred experience with coastal and marine projects, or infrastructure redevelopment in urban environments, aligning with the firm's capabilities in iconic coastal structures and urban planning.

Familiarity with sustainable energy development and resource extraction methods, reflecting the firm's broader expertise in pioneering resource extraction methods and sustainable energy sources.

Experience supporting legal counsel and expert witnesses in environmental litigation or arbitration matters.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position based in New York, NY.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Travel may be required up to 25% domestically to meet project and client needs.

This role reports to the Practice Area Leader for Remediation within the True Environmental organization.
