About the role
Stepful is a workforce platform that trains healthcare workers and connects them with major health systems. We are seeking a senior technical lead to build out our learning management systems, career placement tools, and internal operational platforms. You will own the technical strategy and execution for our core educational products, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and aligned with user needs. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and instructors to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions. This role demands a hands-on engineer who is comfortable diving into code while also thinking about system architecture at scale. You will be instrumental in shaping the user experience for thousands of learners and career coaches across the country.

What you'll do
- Architect and enhance our learning management system with a focus on adaptive learning paths, interactive gamification elements, and features that foster meaningful peer engagement among healthcare trainees.
- Design and implement career services tools that leverage generative AI to guide graduates through dynamic resume building and realistic mock interview preparation scenarios.
- Develop and maintain internal software applications used by career coaches, training instructors, and platform operators to monitor student progress and improve overall learner outcomes.
- Engineer robust systems for large-scale content creation, curriculum sequencing, and dynamic course management that support diverse educational tracks.
- Construct and oversee critical data pipelines to guarantee the integrity and consistency of information, empowering business and operations teams to make confident, data-driven decisions.
- Optimize the performance, security, and reliability of our web applications to deliver a seamless experience for users across various devices and network conditions.
- Lead technical design discussions and code reviews to uphold best practices, enforce coding standards, and ensure long-term maintainability of the codebase.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define product requirements, prioritize features, and identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, conducting knowledge-sharing sessions, and fostering a collaborative engineering culture.
- Participate in on-call rotations to support production systems, investigate incidents, and implement fixes that minimize downtime and user impact.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and tools that could enhance our development workflow, testing strategies, or product capabilities.
- Contribute to the creation of technical documentation that captures system architecture, APIs, and implementation details for current and future team members.
Requirements
- Bring 10+ years of full-stack engineering experience, demonstrating a proven ability to manage the entire development lifecycle from initial concept through deployment and maintenance.
- Show advanced proficiency in React and TypeScript, with a strong understanding of component design, state management patterns, and modern frontend tooling.
- Demonstrate experience with at least one of the following backend languages and frameworks: Python, Node.js, or Ruby on Rails, including database design and API development.
- Exhibit the capability to thrive in an early-stage startup environment where priorities shift quickly and resourcefulness is essential.
- Illustrate a history of writing clean, testable, and well-documented code that adheres to industry-standard best practices.
- Highlight experience working with complex data models and building data-intensive applications that require careful attention to performance and scalability.
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences, translating business objectives into technical requirements and implementation plans.
- Embrace a growth mindset, showing willingness to learn new technologies, tackle ambiguous problems, and take ownership of challenging assignments.

- Previous experience working in a direct-to-consumer startup, specifically within the EdTech or healthcare sectors, where you have navigated the unique challenges of these markets.
Practical notes
- The interview process for this role includes a 30-minute recruiter call to discuss background and expectations, followed by a 2.75-hour technical round that combines live coding exercises with a manager interview to assess technical depth and fit.
- The process concludes with a 1.5-hour onsite visit where candidates engage with the team, tour the workspace, and participate in additional interviews.
- Compensation is structured as a base salary and equity, with no bonus structure attached to this position.
