About the role
You will own the integrity and accuracy of payroll, commissions, and incentive calculations across the entire business. You will partner with the Head of Remuneration to design, test, and refine remuneration models that scale with our rapid growth. You will act as the primary data analyst for all payroll-related datasets, transforming raw information into actionable insights for leadership. You will collaborate closely with IT and Finance to resolve system issues and ensure our payroll technology stack operates at peak performance. You will investigate anomalies and discrepancies in commission and payroll outputs, driving resolutions from root cause to final payment. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and documentation related to remuneration systems and controls. You will support the implementation of new features and functionality within our payroll and commission platforms. You will ensure all payroll and commission activities comply with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

What you'll do
Investigate and reconcile payroll and commission data anomalies across multiple systems to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Develop and maintain reports and dashboards that provide visibility into payroll costs, commission liabilities, and performance metrics.
Translate complex business rules for commissions and incentives into technical specifications for system configuration.
Perform data quality checks on employee master data, rate cards, and hours worked to prevent payroll errors.
Collaborate with Business Analysts to design and test new remuneration models before deployment.
Support the Head of Remuneration in forecasting commission liabilities and analyzing the financial impact of pay plan changes.
Audit payroll outputs to verify compliance with award conditions, company policies, and legislative requirements.
Lead root cause analysis for payroll and commission errors, coordinating with IT and stakeholders to implement corrective actions.
Optimize existing processes and system configurations to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention in payroll workflows.
Provide subject matter expertise to assist with system selection and enhancement projects related to payroll and remuneration.
Challenge data assumptions and validate calculation logic to ensure business rules are applied consistently and correctly.
Support ad hoc analysis requests from Finance and Leadership to inform strategic decisions on remuneration strategy.
Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to automate manual tasks using available tools and scripts.
Maintain strong communication with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on payroll processes and outcomes.
Requirements
You must possess a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Data Analytics, or a related quantitative field.
You must have proven experience as a payroll analyst or similar role, with exposure to commissions and variable pay components.
You must demonstrate advanced proficiency in Excel, including the ability to manipulate large datasets and build complex formulas.
You must have experience with at least one payroll system and an understanding of how payroll processes integrate with HR and finance systems.
You must be familiar with data analysis tools, such as SQL, Power BI, or Tableau, and be able to use them to extract and interpret data.
You must have a strong understanding of Australian award conditions, modern awards, and legislative payroll requirements.
You must have excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
You must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets and draw meaningful conclusions.
You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
You must be highly organized, proactive, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
You must be comfortable working within a collaborative team environment and contributing to a positive, growth-oriented culture.
You must be able to demonstrate a track record of owning end-to-end responsibilities and delivering accurate results under tight deadlines.
You must be eligible to obtain a National Police Check and maintain compliance with Smart Energy's safeguarding policies.
You must be authorized to work in Australia without sponsorship at this time.
Nice to have
Experience with remuneration platforms or commission management systems.
Knowledge of Rinnai products or the hot water and energy sector.
Experience with VBA or automation tools to streamline payroll processes.
Understanding of energy retail or customer billing models.
