About the role
SingerLewak is seeking a Tax Partner specializing in State and Local Tax matters to join their Los Angeles office. This role involves guiding clients through complex SALT compliance, planning, and controversy issues across multiple jurisdictions and industries. As a partner-level position, the individual will contribute to business development and mentor team members within the firm's tax practice. What you'll do
- Advise clients on state and local tax compliance obligations across multiple jurisdictions and industries
- Lead SALT planning engagements to help organizations minimize tax liabilities and manage exposure
- Review and prepare state tax filings including income, franchise, and sales tax returns
- Represent clients in audits, appeals, and administrative proceedings before state tax authorities
- Develop and maintain client relationships to support long-term engagement and business growth
- Mentor junior staff and associates in the tax department on technical SALT matters
- Collaborate with other practice groups within SingerLewak to deliver integrated client solutions
- Monitor changes in state and local tax legislation and assess impact on client portfolios
- Contribute to business development efforts through proposals, presentations, and networking activities
- Support the SL forward program by participating in firm-wide learning and development initiatives
- Oversee tax compliance projects and ensure quality standards are met across all deliverables
- Coordinate with state tax authorities and third-party advisors to resolve complex tax disputes
- Participate in firm recruitment and retention efforts to attract top tax talent to SingerLewak
- Provide technical guidance on sales and use tax matters including nexus and sourcing rules
- Assess client tax positions and identify opportunities for voluntary disclosure or amnesty programs
- Prepare internal memoranda and technical advisory documents to support the tax practice team
Requirements
- Hold a valid CPA certification or equivalent professional accounting credential
- Possess significant experience in state and local tax practice at a public accounting firm
- Demonstrate strong technical knowledge of multi-state tax compliance and planning principles
- Have a proven track record of business development and client relationship management
- Exhibit excellent communication skills for presenting complex tax concepts to clients and teams
- Show leadership ability in guiding and developing professional staff within the tax group
- Maintain current awareness of state and local tax laws, regulations, and court decisions
- Hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field from an accredited institution
- Bring a minimum of several years of progressive experience in a tax advisory capacity
- Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously with attention to detail
- Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Have experience managing and developing a team of tax professionals and support staff

- Effective use of presentation and proposal software for client-facing deliverables
- Comfort with remote collaboration tools and virtual meeting platforms for client interactions
- Understanding of data analytics techniques applied to tax compliance and planning workflows
