About the role
You will operate as a key technical specialist within the Specialty Tax Services group, owning complex multistate tax compliance and consulting initiatives for a diverse portfolio of clients. This role requires you to exercise significant ownership over the research, analysis, and documentation of intricate tax positions across multiple jurisdictions. You will be accountable for translating nuanced tax regulations into practical strategies that directly support client business objectives and risk management. You will partner closely with managers and partners to shape the technical direction of engagements and ensure the delivery of high-quality, value-added outcomes. The position demands proactive communication, where you will clearly articulate tax implications and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You will mentor junior team members by providing guidance, review, and constructive feedback to elevate the overall capability of the service line. Success in this role is defined by your ability to manage a high volume of demanding assignments while maintaining a strict commitment to quality, accuracy, and timely delivery. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of the firm's methodologies and knowledge assets, helping to solidify SingerLewak's industry reputation for tax excellence.

What you'll do
Investigate and resolve complex multistay tax issues across various industry sectors, determining the applicability of statutes, regulations, and administrative rulings.
Analyze detailed transactional structures and business operations to identify potential tax exposures, savings opportunities, and compliance obligations in multiple tax jurisdictions.
Prepare comprehensive technical memoranda that document research conclusions, analytical methodologies, and supporting rationale for intricate tax positions.
Perform advanced calculations related to multistate income apportionment, factor analysis, and allocation methodologies to ensure accurate tax reporting.
Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external clients to gather necessary documentation, clarify business operations, and validate underlying assumptions.
Develop and maintain sophisticated Excel models to perform detailed tax calculations, scenario analyses, and data reconciliation for large, complex engagements.
Conduct in-depth reviews of client-prepared workpapers and tax returns to identify inconsistencies, gaps, and areas requiring enhancement or correction.
Collaborate with professionals across different service lines to provide integrated solutions that address the multifaceted nature of client tax challenges.
Monitor evolving legislative and regulatory changes at the state and local level, assessing their potential impact on client portfolios and recommending proactive strategies.
Represent SingerLewak in client discussions by articulating technical findings clearly and professionally, thereby building trust and demonstrating thought leadership.
Perform quality control reviews on assigned deliverables to ensure adherence to the firm's standards, policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Manage multiple project timelines concurrently, prioritizing tasks and resources to meet firm and client deadlines without compromising the integrity of the work product.
Utilize firm-provided technology and databases to research tax issues, track developments, and maintain an organized repository of relevant source materials.
Contribute to business development efforts by participating in client presentations, proposal development, and the dissemination of industry insights and best practices.
Requirements
Must currently hold a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution, demonstrating a strong academic foundation.
Must possess a minimum of eight years of progressive experience in tax, with a demonstrated focus on multistate taxation for corporations or similar entities.
Must have hands-on experience preparing multistate corporate income tax returns, including complex forms and associated documentation.
Must exhibit a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of state and local taxation as they apply to businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions.
Must be well-versed in researching and applying primary source tax authorities, including statutes, regulations, and official rulings.
Must have advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of complex formulas, pivot tables, and macros for data analysis and reporting.
Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear, concise, and technically accurate documents and presentations.
Must be able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, consistently meeting demanding deadlines under pressure.
Nice to have
Preferred candidates will have prior experience with Multistate Sales and Use Taxation, demonstrating knowledge of sourcing rules and registration requirements.
Preferred candidates will have a proven track record with Multistate Property Taxation, including familiarity with inventory property and commercial property tax frameworks.
Preferred candidates will have expertise in Multistate Income and Franchise Taxation, including understanding of apportionment formulas and nexus concepts.
Practical notes
This is a full-time, hourly position based in the Los Angeles, California office.
Travel is not expected to be a routine part of this role.
This position does not require security clearance.
