Senior AI/ML Engineer
Job description
About the Role
You will own the design and delivery of AI capabilities that sit at the heart of Sigma's product, turning the data platform into an intelligent, interactive collaborator for enterprise users. You will lead the development of features such as natural language querying, intelligent recommendations, and agentic workflows that allow users to explore, analyze, and act on data with unprecedented speed. You will partner closely with product, design, and engineering teams to identify high-impact opportunities where AI can unlock new forms of insight and automation. Your work will involve prototyping complex AI systems that feel simple to use but perform sophisticated operations behind the scenes, including advanced search, machine translation, and reasoning workflows. You will be responsible for developing and scaling the underlying ML infrastructure that powers both internal tooling and customer-facing features, ensuring reliability and performance at enterprise scale. You will tackle novel user experience problems at the intersection of interactive analytics, AI, and application workflows, translating ambiguous product needs into robust technical solutions. Your contributions will become an integral part of how thousands of enterprises build, explore, and make decisions directly inside Sigma. You will play a key role in adapting and fine-tuning foundation models for novel domains, ensuring that Sigma's AI capabilities remain at the forefront of the industry.
Key facts
What you'll do
Partner with product, design, and engineering teams to identify high-impact AI/ML opportunities that move the business forward.
Prototype and productionize AI systems that feel intuitive but do a lot under the hood, including recommendations, natural language interfaces, agentic workflows, and other advanced capabilities.
Develop and scale AI/ML infrastructure that delivers reliable performance for internal tooling and customer-facing features across cloud environments.
Tackle novel user experience problems at the intersection of AI, BI, and applications, turning ambiguous requirements into production-ready solutions.
Adapt and fine-tune foundation models (language or multimodal) for novel domains to meet the specific needs of Sigma's enterprise customers.
Build systems that enable deep integration between AI outputs and interactive data exploration, ensuring that insights remain accurate, explainable, and actionable.
Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, and SREs to establish robust pipelines for data curation, model training, deployment, and ongoing monitoring.
Design and implement mechanisms for evaluating AI quality at scale, using both automated metrics and human feedback to drive continuous improvement.
Champion best practices in model governance, security, and privacy, ensuring that AI features comply with enterprise standards and regulatory expectations.
Contribute to the broader data and AI community through internal talks, code reviews, and documentation that helps other teams leverage AI effectively within Sigma.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
10+ years of experience building and deploying production-grade AI/ML systems in real-world environments.
Deep knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and applied AI across a range of model types and use cases.
Experience across the full ML lifecycle, including data curation, feature engineering, model training, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
A track record of shipping complex AI capabilities such as recommendations, search, machine translation, or similarly sophisticated systems.
Experience adapting or training foundation models for specialized domains, including language-based and multimodal models.
Proven ability to build and maintain scalable infrastructure that supports high-throughput inference and training workloads.
Strong understanding of cloud platforms, software engineering practices, and MLOps tooling to operate robust AI systems in production.
Nice to have
You've built agents that can plan, reason, and use tools effectively in real applications.
You know your way around major cloud infrastructure providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
You've worked in a fast-moving startup or high-growth environment where shipping quickly and iterating based on feedback is essential.
